Keto For Dummies

(Toni) #1

Hi, I’m on day 5 of keto. I failed on the first 3 days by eating a banana and oats without properly checking carbs etc.

Anyway, I am using an app to track carbs and it says that eggs have 1g carbs - whether it’s 1 or3 eggs that you eat, but I’ve read that eggs don’t contain carbs. Which is correct? Also bacon - is that carb free, however much you eat?

I’m starting keto to feel better and lose weight and hopefully to help reduce symptoms from a head injury. I’ve had my gallbladder removed and convinced myself I couldn’t do keto because my pancreas was having a moment and been advised low fat diet. However, after just 5 days on much lower carbs and higher fat, I don’t have anymore pain from the gallbladder removal area or pain from my pancreas. The only time I had pain was the day I went way over my carb limit. So I don’t understand the why’s, but if it means I’m pain free then it’s worth it :smiley::smiley:.

I love bananas. Did same thing as you at first. Mixed it in with Greek yogurt because it’s sour. Gave the bananas up and grains. People may frown on fact I mix sugar free jello with yogurt to for go the bananas. Instead of oats try chia seeds or small amount of hemp heart’s it’s a good sub.

1 large egg has about 0.56grams of carbs. Im assuming that whatever app you are using to track is rounding up to 1. Bacon can have a very small amount of carbs to none. If a product has less than 1 gram of carbs, a company is allowed to say it has 0 grams.

You may find a lot of useful information on this website by Cavin Balaster. He has a book and a podcast and has been interviewed on other podcasts. He discussed treating brain injury with a high fat diet, in fact he suffered a severe brain injury himself and talks about his journey from that using a keto diet. http://feedabrain.com

Bacon is often processed with sugar (variable amounts), so definitely read the labels to know what the carb content is so you can track accordingly, or avoid those brands altogether. There are some brands that have no sugar added, but around here I can only find them at Whole Foods.

Welcome!
Good to track with an app - especially in the beginning to help learn the macro ropes. There can be a lot of sneaky carbs out there. But don’t be a slave to it either. Concern yourself with the basics for now. There’s lots to learn and it can be a bit daunting. And my go to fav: dietdoctor.com has lots of good info.

Thank you - I will take a look.

And thanks for the info on the carbs. If the app is rounding up carbs rather than down, it’s in my favour.

It’s an Aldi special. Less than .5g per 100g. Less than .5g fibre, so that cancels it out…?

I’m definitely on for keeping it simple!

Yes, probably. For counting carbs you probably don’t need to worry then unless you’re eating a lot of it. I wonder where the fiber comes from though, don’t think there’s any in bacon, typically. I’d look at ingredients out of curiosity.
