Today I was going on 68 hours of fasting and several tough workouts, so I decided to listen to my body and break my fast. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Starbucks has finally developed a low-carb “sous vide egg bite” snack. ~300 cals, 200 of which is fat, low carb of course, and moderate protein (19 g if I remember correctly). It took them 20+ years, but they’ve figured out a bread-free egg offering! Yay! That plus a cafe misto with half whole milk / half heavy cream (which I’m told is somehow distinct from half n half somehow? anybody know?) and it was a perfect way to break my fast

Keto "Fast" Food Options that don't suck...or do they?
In another discussion in this forum, someone brought this up but didn’t get a positive review. I think it was @devhammer who pointed out that each portion had 9 grams carb. So the two you have comes out to 18 grams. See discussion here:
Use caution. As I discussed here, there are 9g of carbs in one, most of which is sugar or starch:
I personally would avoid them on that basis, though in a pinch, if you don’t have other options, they could be “less worse” than other choices at SBUX.
Me, I’d just buy a pouch of Moon Cheese.
Where are you guys getting the 9 carbs in one from? I assumed 2 was a serving and 9 carbs for both? It did still stand out to me, but after fasting for 68 hours and 5 tough workouts, seemed ok…am I missing something clarifying that the 9 calories is only for one of the 2?
And yes, of course there are better options. But, in a pinch. And for what it’s worth, YUM. Sous vide is winning me over.
Whether it’s 9 each, or 9 for both, that’s still a significant source of carbs for one dish, particularly since it appears to all be sugar or starch.
That being said, I’m not in the business of telling people what they should or shouldn’t eat. Hence my use of the term “caution”.
But each person’s tolerance is different, so everyone has to make their own call.
I personally would not go for these, given the nutrition info, but if you like them and they don’t cause you issues, then by all means, go for it.
But also understand that 9g of carbs per serving isn’t really low-carb. For folks who are trying to stay under 20g/day that’s more than half of what they can consume, so that’s worth noting.
Hi @beckyjoy, you are totally correct that our wording should be done in a respectful manner, not to let others feel demoralized, but instead empowered with knowledge on their keto journey. If in any way you felt demoralized by my post, as opposed to empowered with knowledge, please accept my humble apologies. I support your keto journey and your choices as you wade through this world of a myriad of confusing options and celebrate your successes.
Bravo on your fasting accomplishment, by the way!
I would be skeptical that the first ingredient in these is not “eggs” but “cottage cheese”–with a laundry list of non-cheese ingredients in that.
If you look at that article it says that the protein and cal amount is for both, so I’d assume the carbs are also?
Also I have to admit…I’m a little bummed by how strongly negative everyone’s reactions are. I just thought it was a decent snack if you find yourself needing one out and about but don’t want to totally fall off the wagon. Maybe we can try to keep the culture of the forum a bit more positive and supportive, especially for newbies (like me, by the way). This way of eating can be tough at first but ultimately so wonderful for our health, it would be a shame to drive anyone away due to the tone (even if not overtly negative, just really quick to react and only point out the downside with no nod to the potential benefits) of a post.
(note that I am often told I often make assumptions about others’ intent and infer meaning that isn’t there so apologies if my feeling are feeling hurt for no reason! lol!)
Starbucks Possible New Keto Food Option
As you note at the bottom of your reply, it can be really hard to judge intent by words on a screen. While I don’t always succeed, I do try not to make judgments about other’s food choices, but rather to couch my comments in either what I would or wouldn’t do, or things about which I’d advise caution.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but my intent is about helping people be successful, which includes sharing my opinion on things that may work for some, but not for others.
Also important to take into account that none of us commenting knows your full history, how long you’ve been keto, etc., so we may err on the side of assuming less knowledge/experience than you actually have.
Long-winded way of saying I hope that I didn’t discourage you, as that wasn’t my intent.
Thanks for your thoughtful, kind reply, @devhammer! I cross-posted over in the other thread about the new starbucks option but should cross-post back here too to convey that people actually DID say positive things, too!
Still, very nice of you to reply to this! I appreciate it a lot! <3
OK so I am going to chime in at the eleventh hour!
I would take a portion size to be two if that is what they serve you for one person and that is what is in the picture. Personally, I would keep it to the - emergency caught out and about hungry need to eat - category purely because of the weird list of ingredients. I mean, really, could they not make it without all the shitty stuff?
I wouldn’t freak out too much about the carb content. 9g is a reasonable whack in one meal but then you can so easily balance that the rest of the day. People are always going to draw your attention to carb content and ingredients because that is what we are all about when we are keto. Take it on board, do your own weighing up and make the decision that is right for you. You would be really pissed off if you were under the impression these were super low carb and hadn’t realised you would need to keep a strict eye on carbs for the rest of the day. Don’t get offended by people pointing things like this out, they are only thing to help. Remember also, that they are considering everyone else who reads your post, not just you. They will want to make sure that others are aware too.
There is something lovely about finding something reasonable you can order rather than having to always take your own stuff. Well done on your fast and workouts. It sounds like you are going for it big time.
That’s a good point, but probably only works for folks who are pretty meticulous about counting and tracking carbs. I don’t, and that’s probably one reason for my bias against taking on that large a chunk at one meal, because I’m not confident that I will remain safely under the limit.
Excited.
Then bummed.
I try to keep to net 5. But that’s me. Lol
fuck you Starbucks!
Lol. But hey @beckyjoy! Good job finding this! It will work for many ketoers! At least Starbutts is trying. Lol
They could try a damn site harder IMO. WTF is with all the weird ingredients like rice starch?
I don’t tend to track either @devhammer but I could easily balance by having a meal of say steak and spinach. Most of us eat only two or one meals a day. It is not ideal, but I could work around it. I wouldn’t make it a regular thing though and you pointing the pitfalls out is a great thing because someone might have read this post and thought - yay I can have this fro breakfast every day,
SBUX BEVERAGE FAIL WARNING:
Today I wanted something from SBUX that was a little sweet but not more espresso as I was already plenty caffeinated. I ordered a vanilla creme from the app, specifying to use HWC and sugar free vanilla instead of normal vanilla syrup. I felt so proud of myself when I got it and it tasted good … and then after sucking it down realized it maybe tasted TOO good. Did some researdh and realized it has a sneaky EXTRA full-sugar “vanilla creme syrup” - UGGGHHHH. Literally feel poisoned.
Next time I want this kind of thing I’ll probably go “steamed milk” with HWC instead of milk and a few pumps of sugar free vanilla…although even that…when I asked the employee about the vanilla creme snafu, he admitted that their “sugar free” syrups aren’t really fully sugar free and have sucralose and maltodextrin.
Anyone thiink Starbucks could get on the buttered coffee train?? I’ve heard 2017 is going to be the year of the keto diet!
