Keto Deserts and Lack of Appetite

(Amanda Tirado) #1

Hello again to you all! I am wondering if I can get some opinions. I have some amazing cookbooks and love variety when it comes to food. Is it ok to incorporate these as a treat on a rare occasion? I know a lot of people swear by not consuming artificial sweeteners. I definitely will not be consuming pre-made baked goods as I can’t control what goes in them. Also I just started keto about a week ago, so I don’t want to get derailed.

I also have noticed lately that I don’t have a big appetite. I finally have made sure to drink a lot more water, salt my food, and pay attention to electrolytes. But after I eat breakfast I just don’t want more food. It would be easy to skip lunch at least or dinner but I don’t know if that’s healthy. Any tips would be appreciated!

Eat only when hungry and do things whichever way works for you. We all have different needs.

In my opinion, which probably doesn’t count for much lol, an occasional dessert is absolutely fine!! Do your homework and find something that is keto friendly and that fits your tastes. I wouldn’t however make it a daily habit. Make your dessert, portion it out, and what you don’t eat now, put in the freezer for next time. An added bonus is you now have something already made and should the urge arise you are much less likely to fall off the rails!! Hope this helps!!

In my experience of 8 months of keto and knowing my own nature, occasional desserts don’t work for me - ESPECIALLY if you portion it out to legitimate serving sizes. That’s like how a serving of ice cream is half a cup. Are they insane? While I advise against cheating at least for the first few weeks, the way I do my keto is that I’m keto for the whole week except for maybe a few hours on one day or maybe even a whole day. During that “window” I allow myself to eat as much as I want of anything I want. This way, I never feel like I’m denying myself of anything I want (merely postponing) and I’m able to remain STRICT keto for the other 97% of the time.

I’m not a fan of those keto cookbooks, either. While the recipes generally have fewer carbs than their non-keto equivalent, they often have high amounts of carbs given the serving sizes. It’s fine if you’re going to JUST eat one serving of that one thing during the day, but in combination with the rest of your diet and incidental carbs, it seems like it’s too much. Just my opinion, though, and I’m a weekly cheater, so many wouldn’t hold my opinion in high esteem anyway (though I did manage to lose 50 lbs in the first 4 or 5 months and now I’m putting on muscle; changing my whole body comp with keto!).

Keto desserts can be a bad thing or just fine depending upon your perspective. Can you eat them “on occasion”? Or would you have to eat 3 or 4 servings at a sitting and at every meal, or even instead of a meal? I kinda feel like the answer to that matters. The occasional is a non-issue as far as I’m concerned.

When you eat, eat well. And eat real food. If you decide a keto dessert is your happy ending for your meal, I have no major problem with that. I would be reluctant, though, if you are basically making your keto dessert, say some kind of keto cupcake or muffin, your whole meal.

Context and perspective are important, at least to my way of thinking.

I don’t think there is anything inherently wrong with having some keto friendly treats, but you’d need to see if it works for you.

I can’t handle having treats/desserts because they are a real trigger for me and I eat them in the same disordered way as I would have eaten non-keto desserts pre-keto… i.e., eat the whole lot until I feel sick and then craving and want to keep eating them every day until they are gone. When I eliminate treats and desserts I stop obsessing over them after 2 or 3 days. I’ve decided that I will only make them family birthdays/Christmas etc in order to limit the damage! That ends up being about once a month/6 weeks anyway, so regular enough to give me something to look forward to but not so regular that I’m going to sabotage my progress.

I haven’t tried this theory out but I think the same disordered eating would happen if I started using ‘keto’ breads/pastas etc, and so have stayed away from them completely!

It’s important to keep your calories up, as allowing them to drop consistently will just lower your metabolic rate, which is not a good thing for most people, and is counterproductive. That it’s also counter-intuitive doesn’t help
