Keto breath... does it ever go away?

(Nina S. ) #1

Today is day 4 of staying under 20g of carbs/day and this terrible bad breath just won’t go away! Will it ever and is there anything I can do to control/eliminate it??

Here’s my experience so far… should I be worried??

Day 1 was good aside from the bad breath (I was doing 30g of carbs 2 weeks prior and noticed a slight change in smell). I wasn’t hungry or felt anything out of the norm. (Had a total of 18g of carbs for the day)

Day 2 was ok but I started experiencing late afternoon migraine type headaches and the bad breath increased. Also felt tired… was even late to work  (Had a total of 21g of carbs for the day)

Day 3 (yesterday) had another late afternoon headache and leg muscle cramps at night. The bad breath was just terrible! I tested for ketones and had a small amount traced according to the graph on the bottle. (Had a total of 19g of carbs for the day)

Day 4 (today) I woke up extremely tired and nauseous (I guess it was from the leg cramps last night and maybe hunger?). I had my usual bullet proof coffee (that’s been my breakfast for the last 3 days) and felt better… I guess I was hungry but just now I felt some mild palpitations (can’t be the coffee it’s decaf). Am I doing something wrong??

**I’ve been staying well hydrated (a gallon of water/day)

Please help!

You may want to drink some ketoaid and/or eat more salt that should help with the headaches. A magnesium supplement helped my leg cramps.

I’ve been keto for 4-5 months and getting that breath tells me I don’t need to test my blood ketone levels because it only comes if my ketones are >2. Consider it a free test. Get stoked on the dragon breath!

Same here. Ten years of occasional leg cramps and Charlie horses were cured since I started my magnesium supplement six months ago. I still think about it every day. Unbelievable! I feel like I won a lottery I’m so happy. (420mg/daily)

@Hapygirl thank you for the tips! I will try it tonight
@ dead-fred is that a dosage you put yourself on or was it recommended by a physician?

@Kris86 LOL I just can’t stand the dragon breath! I feel like everyone around me can smell it if I CAN SMELL IT!

I have been doing keto for 9 weeks and I never had the breath just bad egg farts lol driving my wife nut at bedtime lol, 9 weeks here and still not fat adapted but I cannot keep my carbs at 20 or even 25 because I need 5000 mg of potassium and can’t do that at 20 or 25 net grams, and pretty hard at 30

@Regina thanks for the link! Very helpful!!

@championsidewinder I laughed so hard just now! Sorry about your bad egg farts! I think I’d take that over the dragon breath! I’m still pretty new at this myself. Started eating 30g of carbs on July 30th and just lowered it to 20g of carbs this Monday. I can tell you day 2 and 3 were my worst (symptom wise), by day 3 I was feeling better and today I feel VERY good and energized.

I will take keto dragon breath any day rather than sulpherous burps and egg farts…

Well I still get keto flu symptoms at week nine, I’m at 9g of sodium right now and feel kinda icky but more salt? I don’t think so but I went out in the heat and was sweating real bad so maybe I need more, my potassium is at about 2,260 and having trouble hitting 4700 and keeping carbs under 30

@championsidewinder I am not sure since I am still new and this is only day 8 of staying under 20g of carbs. I want to say you can only because I have been told keto is like riding a bike, if you fall off you just jump back on. I’d say play with your numbers until you find the one that works best for you. I got on Google and looked for a macro-nutrient calculator and that’s how I got my numbers (20g/carbs, 90g/protein and 142g /fat) Sometimes I don’t quite reach my fat goal so I purchased MCT oil and will do a tablespoon of that twice a day.

Don’t blame the eggs for what the carbs did. lol

Unless you have a medically recognized potassium deficiency, I wouldn’t worry about getting 5000 mg from food every day. That’s just nuts, and as far as I know, that number is not science-based – it’s just a number someone threw against the wall and it stuck.

I gathered all the information about magnesium that I could… in fact, way more then I needed to know. I researched it from many sources. That led into about 12-hours total of videos about our “cell construction” and how important magnesium is in regard to that. On and on and on…
The bottom line is, there is a lot on this subject on the net.
