Keto and liver cirrhosis

(Midnight Sun) #1

Hello all,

I have a very specific question that I can’t seem to find searching the internet. My dad has non-alcoholic liver cirrhosis and had the tips procedure (liver bypass?). I think the liver cirrhosis was caused by the industrial amount of insulin he takes daily (type 2 diabetes), but that’s another story.

I know that on keto that your liver does alot of the work and also produces all the glucose that you need. How does this work with a liver that’s not working and it has been bypassed?

Any info or article will help

This may be what you are looking for?

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps regulate glucose (blood sugar) levels. The cirrhotic liver does not respond to insulin. Thus, glucose cannot enter the cells and stays elevated in the blood (diabetes). People with cirrhosis are not able to mobilize glucose out of the body’s reserves, and they can easily develop low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

Would that meant that a Ketogenic diet is not good for him? or he would still need to consume a higher amount of carbs?

n=1 experiment. I had a small amt of Non Alcohol Fatty liver and it is disappearing on strict keto according to my bio markers. YMMV.
