Keto and iv therapy

(David Sedlak) #1

Hi. New to the boards and first 9 days of Keto done.

Has anyone researched supplementing Keto with iv drip nutritional therapy? This would be for electrolytes, magnesium, etc. thoughts and experiences would be helpful!

Why though? Bioavailable versions of those electrolytes are present in red meat. I don’t see how sticking yourself (and what does this cost?) can be any better. Please clue me in if I’m missing something.

Even if you have access to IV therapy I’ll just remind you that anytime you break your skin you are opening yourself up to infection. IV’s are invasive while eating your nutrition (the way we were intended) isn’t. You should be getting your electrolytes and nutrition through your digestive tract. I’ve never read about anyone using IV therapy for nutritional purposes unless it was medically necessary (or they were juicing).

I am d deficient ( have to be on supplements…genetic problem) which also causes imbalances in my sodium and electrolytes.

Please see my above reply. if I take Gatorade, etc. off my intake, I will not be able to absorb enough electrolytes

If it’s medically indicated then you really need to discuss it with your healthcare practitioner.

David, I agree if you have a condition that requires special attention to electrolytes your doctor is the one to ask. I wasn’t aware of this when I originally answered your question. Are you able to make your own zero carb Gatorade and drink that or are you saying you aren’t absorbing electrolytes orally and require an IV?

Might mention this from the first post if it’s something this specific.

In general, the need for supplementation declines on a well-formulated ketogenic diet. Your circumstances, however, may call for something different.
