Keto and Intermittent Fasting for Skinny Folks

(Adam Smith) #1

Newbie here! I’ve been listening to the back catalog of Carl and Richard’s podcasts, and I have been eating keto for just over a month. My goals are to lose my slowly-growing visceral belly fat (which I’ve had since my early teen years despite being a stick in all other respects) and to otherwise maintain / improve my overall health.

I have really enjoyed the explanations about how keto and fasting work in obese people, but I haven’t really heard anything about fasting for us skinny folks. Based on the Dudes’ cited 30 Calories per day per pound (or was it kg?) of body fat that I can use, I wouldn’t expect to be able to fast in comfort, but I have done short 48 hour fasts with no problem. Are there any resources that address the mechanics of this stuff in skinny people with mostly un-deranged metabolisms?

Loving the decrease in my ADD symptoms, energy, and good moods!

I don’t you need to fast but if you want to you can do a fat fast. If you are IR you can do OMAD and the like to help that.

Regular keto and time will get rid of your visceral fat.

Thanks Matt. I had considered that I might not need to fast, but I had heard about significant benefits that came with it that might’ve been above and beyond normal keto. I think I’ll take your advice and just enjoy my keto food at more traditional intervals… I can always fast if the need arises in the future.

Same as me Adam. I don’t need to fast, but I want the other benefits that can be achieved by doing it.

I lost almost 50 pounds and my belly with keto and no fasting. I got too skinny to be honest. I was down to 157 for a bit and I am almost 6 feet tall. Almost…damn 5’11’ and 1/2

That half is so important…

Ha ha, I have an aunt who swears that she is 4’11-1/2". She darn sure places value on that half inch too.

I’m starting to wonder if I was overthinking al this. What if I just eat when I get hungry?

I’m in the same situation. My primary interest in fasting is autophagy/longevity but I don’t have much fat to spare. As it stands my plan is to do multiple shorter fasts (24-36 hr) & then gradually increase. The underlying hope being that I can train my metabolism, so to speak, not to freak out during prolonged fasting states.

I eat when I stay hungry as the feeling of hunger comes and goes throughout the fast, so when it doesn’t go away, I eat.

That is in general good advice to everyone, keto or not. There is a few similar points to this, when you feel hunger, have a glass of water, you might just be thirsty. If hunger comes back within half an hour or so, consider to eat. Another one is to think if you would have plain, raw kale right at that moment, if you do, consider to eat.

The water trick works wonders. I typically drink a large glass of water before I eat. Even if I am still hungry it tends to help me eat less.
