I just watched the short film Keto and Fast Food with Ivor Cummings and Bjarte Bakke which is available to Diet Doctor subscribers here.

I enjoyed the film and the take-away message (excuse the pun!) was it is easy enough to grab a meal on the go from many fast food outlets, you just have to tell them what you want. My best results have been in McDonalds who do a good job with naked burgers and side salad.

Anyway, I was interested about their comments in Starbucks where they tried to avoid milk in their coffee due to the natural sugars in the milk. This is not something I have considered and have been drinking a fair amount of coffee with full fat milk in it since going Keto. I think I will try using double cream (heavy cream) in my coffee instead. I do like the occasional Cortado though. :coffee:

I wonder why cream is considered better than milk? Is it just because you use less of it?

Kind of …I only need one tablespoon of cream in my tea which has 0.4g of carbs whereas the 2 tablespoons of milk have 0.8g so the carb count per tablespoon is similar.
Also the cream has much more fat per tablespoon 7.1g as opposed to 0.6g so helps with satiety too.
Those are UK measures by the way…not sure if the US cream is quite so high fat . Also the milk I use has had the lactose removed so regular full fat milk may be higher in carbs than the cream anyway.

Because it’s mostly fat… And tastes way better!

It has less sugar and more fat.

I don’t use less of it, I get 2 oz of espresso over ice in a 16 oz cup and then top off wiht heavy cream. Its wonderful.

Yes, Starbucks is really good about providing heavy cream. Every now and then you get a newbie who reaches for the can of whipped cream so just watch them. My go to is an Americano with heavy cream. I looked at the carb content of all other drinks and they are just too high. I’ve actually been wondering if they are starting to get more requests for this with the popularity of LC/Keto rising.

Is this how you order this? (Just how you typed it out?). Sounds good.

(Linda Culbreth) #8

Cream doesn’t have the sugars and carbs milk does. The labels on both make that pretty clear.

That’s mine also! Sometimes people can get heavy handed with cream also. Only enough to cut a bit of the bitterness. I just finished installing my home espresso machine. So I’m back in control. My old one broke irreparably 3 months ago…:weary:

No. I order it as:

“Iced Dopio with light ice in a vinte cup with an extra splash of heavy cream.”

It’s best to do a mobile order or they may ring it up as a latte (which costs more).

This is great, thank you.

They are definitely getting more requests for heavy cream at Starbucks. They don’t seem very surprised lately. I did have one barista say very sarcastically " hope you enjoy that" like he was disgusted but I figure he’s just missing out. Another barista commented that at least I was doing it right when I ordered the gruyere/bacon egg bites with my Americano w Heavy Cream. . He understood keto but said people could me in an order a heavy cream drink with a high carb food and he doesn’t get that.

Ya, I haven’t yet had the sous vide egg bites as I’ve just not been in much lately. I do plan to try them soon. A little bit frustrated that they contain 9g carbs. Why? They could’ve been made with 1-2 carbs max. Looked up the ingredients list and the egg is mixed with a skim milk cottage cheese. I’ll try them anyway but it probably won’t be a regular. I also sometimes just order one of the meat, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches and eat it off the bun with a fork.

I had them once (pre-keto). But I havn’t ordered them again because I realized I was spending like $2 for an egg.
