I just started keto on Monday. Checked my blood ketones yesterday, they were 1.9. Today, my 20 month old baby whom I nurse twice a day, has a rash on her back, bottom, and back of thighs. Might keto be causing to me excrete something dangerous in my breastmilk, and should I stop?
Keto and breastfeeding
Probably unrelated (i’m a long-time provider and now getting my lactation consultant credential). I honestly can’t imagine what would transfer into or change the composition of your breast milk by getting into ketosis, and even if it is a response to keto I can’t imagine that it’s dangerous in anyway. If there any other symptoms, like fever or irritability, it could be an infectious process and you might want to call your pediatric care provider. Are you in the roasting southwest by chance? Could be heat rash.
Not to mention, breastmilk itself is ketogenic, it’s required for the child’s brain development. Gotta be something other than mom’s diet.
Has your daughter’s skin improved? My girls frequently broke out in random rashes when they were little. I breastfed, but I ate garbage because I didn’t know any better at the time (much guilt about this). I doubt it’s keto related, but of course check with her pediatrician if it is really bothering her, fever, etc. I usually took my daughters to the MD when they got rashes, then was annoyed with myself for wasting the copay when they had no explaination and said to use over the counter hydrocortisone.
I’m breastfeeding now and I have not noticed any negative side effects. I think it’s even made my milk more fatty.
