Keto and alcohol

(Simon Barnes) #1

Hi I have been on keto for about two months but I could do with some knowledge around alcohol no point beating around the bush I used to be a functioning alcoholic and still struggle greatly with alcohol I started off brilliantly on keto and lost over a stone. I have been drinking vodka on a regular basis and I’m trying to cut down or stop drinking which with an addiction is hard. I know vodka stops ketosis happening but I am also looking for advice and I hope I am right in my thoughts because that would also help me stop drinking alcohol. The body metabolizes alcohol before it metabolises the food that you have eaten, am I correct it can’t be good to have a high fat diet when your body is processing alcohol and not the high fat. With ketosis being hi fat low carbs basically your body processes fats internally in a different way and your cholesterol blood pressure internal fat all reduces. am I correct in saying that these will be affected if you reg you drink alcohol and consume high fat on keto

If you are fat adapted and consume alcohol, the liver will process the alcohol first to rid the body of the toxin. Then it will resume to metabolize fats for fuel. Even though hard liquor is made from natural sugars, grains, potatoes, and fruits – during the fermentation and distillation process that sugar is converted into ethyl alcohol.

Drinking liquor can in fact deepen your level of ketosis, but will slow weight loss down. Ingestion of alcohol has effects on liver metabolism, in which more ketones are produced as you drink more. When your liver is taking care of the alcohol you drink, it’s being converted to a triglyceride which can also positively affect the production of ketones.

Be aware that many people experience a heightened level of being drunk and at a quicker rate than usual.

I actually find it easier to avoid alcohol altogether than to try to limit how much I drink. As the saying goes, “One drink is too many, and a thousand aren’t enough.”

If you want to get free of the drink, try this: go 24 hours without a drink—even the worst alcoholic in the world can do that. Don’t swear off for ever—if I did that, I’d go right out and get drunk, lol!

What works for me is to promise myself that I can have a drink tomorrow, just not right now. And then tomorrow, I do it all over again. At the beginning, it was sometimes all about just getting through the next five minutes, but these days, a day at a time works easily enough.

Good luck on your keto journey! And feel free to message me privately if you need to.
