Keto and Acne

(Day Shamsud-Din) #1

I’m on my third attempt at Keto. The first two ended with me quitting after a few weeks the first time, and two months thime second. Each time my face (which is usually clear) broke out dramatically and mostly on my forehead. This third time, Im trying taking bile salts and minimizing the dairy to avoid the breakouts. 2.5 weeks in and once again my face is all broken out. How do I stop this?!?!? How long should it last? What am I doing wrong?

Red Acne breakouts . Why?

Don’t minimize Dairy, eliminate it. Make sure you’re not getting any amounts of grains or beans as well.

My skin is better than ever on keto, and far less greasy. What does your diet look like? Would you mind giving us a typical day or two of what you eat? Also, do you use any vegetable oil? What do you cook with? That sort of thing.

I don’t eat grains or beans, but I do eat dairy. But dairy is well-known to affect people differently. I would take Ken’s advice and eliminate it altogether. You can always add it back in, if it turns out not to be the problem.

P.S.—I can’t tell from your name whether you are a man or a woman. If you are a woman, the problem might be that the change to keto is stirring up your hormones. If so, they should subside after a while, but you would need to ask the women on the forum about how that works. If you are a man, then the problem could still be hormonal, I suppose, but not having had trouble with acne on keto, I couldn’t really help, apart from making dietary suggestions.

I haven’t heard of this with Keto per say, but I do know some other acne treatments warn that your acne will get worse upon initial use of the treatment. Something to do with pushing the toxins out will cause an initial outbreak.

I had a friend in HS with a severe case of acne and she went through several medical treatments for it. She hated everytime she had to switch something around because of this.

Maybe Keto is similar.

I’m trying to get to a point of no dairy. I’m a bit of a cheese fiend. But I guess I should try giving it up completely. I don’t eat any grains.

My skin has become super greasy! On a typical day, I break my fast with a frittata made with eggs, avocado, peppers and beef sausage. I usually have a handful of olives and a small piece of Brie cheese. I don’t eat anything else until dinner which is a protein and a variety of things. Usually my fat is from avocado, coconut oil/milk or olive oil and grass fed butter. I’m a woman. This week I did have some cream cheese and sour cream.

Those all sound like good fats to me! Since I never had ovaries, I’ll have to leave any further trouble-shooting to our forum members of the female persuasion. Sorry not to be of more help.

I’ve heard complaints of Keto rash. I’m not sure if that’s what this is, but it’s happened every time I’ve tried Keto. I’m determined to make this work tho. I know the benefits will be worth it especially if I can tame the acne and unusual menstral cycle.

If it’s Keto rash, search the forum. I think there’s ways to treat it.

I got really spotty for the first few weeks- felt right at home with my 2 teens! It cleared up, certainly by week 4, & has been fine ever since. I eat loads of dairy!

I can do 4 weeks! This give me hope! Lol I think when I did it before they may have gone away in that time, but I was still freaked out about the dark spots they left and was afraid they’d return.

My face has cleared up rather nicely! Thanks for the support and tips, guys!

I’m really glad to hear that. I was pretty sure it would, but I would hate to give advice and find out we were wrong and led you astray.

Now you can KCKO.

Around the time of my monthly, I’m seeing one or two pimples which isn’t unusual for me, except now they’re always on my forehead.

My skin also has several large painful bumps. When I first started keto it was clear sailing. (I wasn’t having much dairy back then)

I’ve started relying on a lot of casseroles lately.

I guess I have to eliminate dairy, but I have eliminated it for the past few days and no progress. What happened?
