Keto Adaptation

(Kylee) #1

Hi Guys,

Is it possible that I have not keto adapted after being on the keto diet and producing ketones (measured by blood) for a year? And this is shown on an orgainic acids test by really high 3-Hydroxybutyric (1159 when ref range is<=3.1) and acetoacetic (177 when ref range <=10) markers, I do have significant mitochondral dysfunction unfortunately. So is this possible? Thanks in advance.

It is possible I suppose. It takes longer for some. Are there reasons you have for thinking you aren’t?

Results of the organic acids. Particularly those markers I mentioned above. I had an Australian practitioner tell me she hadn’t seen those results before and it must be because of how I eat. I’ve since moved on to an American practitioner who is telling me I haven’t keto adapted. I can’t tell as I feel how I feel but I’m suspicious he’s right and I was looking for confirmation that this was possible.

Very possible. It took me around two years, but I was extremely obese at the start…

If I correctly understand some lectures I have watched recently, an obstacle to fat-adaptation is not having enough mitochondria, and it can take a while for them to reproduce. I suppose if your mitochondrial dysfunction is bad enough, you might not yet be fat-adapted. My impression is that a well-formulated ketogenic diet will eventually promote mitochondrial healing, so unless someone else tells you different, you will probably benefit from keeping calm and ketoing on.
