Keto - 3 weeks in & numbers moving downward

#1

Hi all, I am a Type 2 DM, in my 8th year, taking loads of meds for DM and HTN. this is my 3rd week on Keto/LCHF, with a gradual decrease in carbs, from <100g --> 66g --> 45g as of today. I have lost 10.4 lbs so far, but more importantly my blood sugars have dropped significantly, from over 200 to low 100’s. I have been able to reduce my Lantus (insulin) by 15 units/day, which is fantastic, since the last time I saw my Dr., he wanted to put me on short-acting insulin in addition to Lantus. I am greatly encouraged by all the diabetics who are posting, and the fact that many of them have lost significant amounts of weight and have reduced or gone off all their meds. Thanks for your support!

Sounds like you’ve got this… great news for taking control of your own health.

Thanks, @MarkGossage. I was definitely running out of options, and keto seemed like the best one to try.

Fantastic! Keep ketoing on! I’d be willing to bet that it won’t be all that long before you are off insulin entirely.

To encourage you (in addition to some virtual :bacon::bacon::bacon:):

Thanks so much @PaulL! It is very encouraging to see someone completely reverse their T2DM. That is my goal.

I have what Dr. Lustig calls the metabolic syndrome – hypothyroid, HTN, T2DM, hyperlipidemia, and obesity. I take 4 DM meds (Victoza, Lantus, metformin, & glipizide), 3 HTN drugs (Verapamil, Losartan, & Maxide), plus Synthroid. I am trying to get off the DM & HTN meds and realize it will take time.

My BS the last few days have been in the 70s & 80s, mainly because I OD’d on glip yesterday (forgot to take my am dose and took it at lunchtime, then took the 2nd dose last night around 6:30. Within 2 hours after dinner my BS was in the low 70s, ate a snack, and an hour later it was 79. Took a spoonful of agave syrup to prevent it from dropping more before going to bed. It was in the mid80s when I got up in the night, and then it was still mid80s when I tested before breakfast. Decided not to take glip this morning, but did take the rest of my meds. Just tested again and my BS is mid-90s.

So, if my BS stays in the 80s & 90s today, do I not take my glip this evening? I am NOT increasing my carbs (now 20-30g/day), as the whole point of going keto is to reduce/get off my meds.

Be sure to keep in close touch with your doctor as you lower your doses.

Also, are you getting HbA1c readings regularly?

My endocrinologist is out of town until mid-late August. I usually see him 3-4 times/year. I am having my lab work done this upcoming week, so I can see what my numbers are, and schedule my next appt.
