Just starting!

(Monica) #1

Hello everyone! I’m really excited to be starting keto. I have weight and health issues I’m hoping to address with this way of eating: I’m 5’6”, 290 lbs and I have PCOS and a lot of issues to go along with it. I think today has been my first actual day staying under 20 grams of carbs so yay! The day isn’t over yet but I don’t plan to eat again so here’s hoping!

My biggest struggle is that I live with my parents right now and they eat a lot of pasta and breads and things like that, and so I’m having to make different foods entirely to keep on track. Also Pepsi. I feel like I’m addicted to Pepsi… I might have to get some tea for the caffeine at least as I don’t like coffee…

But mostly I’m here because no one else I know eats Keto! Support helps, apparently. I’ve done lots and lots of research but I know cooking and fridge space are going to be some of my biggest obstacles going forward. I’m also really worried about Keto Flu… I’m hoping it doesn’t hit me hard.

Good luck!!! I’m pretty new too.

You can do it. You have already taken the first step.

Keep at it.

Thanks! Good luck to you, too!

Welcome newbie @Trellia!

On the food side, think of it as a little bit of a game.

  • You for breakfast: bacon and eggs with cheese and spinach folded in - them bagels
  • You for lunch: salad with inlaid meat, avocado and blue cheese plus some keto dressing - them sandwiches
  • You for dinner: butter seared Ribeye with sautéed spinach - them pasta (again) with breadsticks (again)

One or both will start getting jealous if you start turning out unique mouth-watering dishes they only see on other tables at restaurants.

Monica, I didn’t have keto “flu,” so just because you hear a lot about it, doesn’t mean it affects everyone. There are a lot of foods that traditionally go on pasta that you can make keto just by putting it on cauliflower. Tomato sauce can be high in sugars so you do have to be careful there, so it just depends on how much you want to eat meals with your family. Otherwise, a meal can be as simple as some cheese and pepperoni. No need for a lot of fridge space there.

Hi and welcome.

When my wife makes pasta I just ask her to put my share of the mincemeat or whatever aside. And I just have by itself with vegetables or whatever. Just have to watch the sauce many have sugar - as long as it isn’t too much then I can manage to stay under.

Pepsi? Avoid it and think of all the baggage your not going wear on your hip.

Weirdness? I have essentially just replaced bread, rice, pasta and sugar with vegetables my family do not think I’m doing anything weird (because I’m not). I am not putting butter in my coffee, not because I think it’s weird, but I prefer cream anyway but my point is I am not drinking butter in front of everybody thst would be too overwhelming for them. And they would start campaigning against me.

Welcome, the first weeks are the hardest. Keep it simple and make sure that you have Keto food you love on hand.

I would ditch the Pepsi.

Welcome Monica.

The Pepsi is probably your biggest obstacle right now. Even if you are not eating, drinking a sugared soda will raise your blood sugar levels which causes insulin to go to work to lower the blood sugar. Keeping your insulin levels low is the key to weight loss. The Pepsi creates a constant state of insulin going into fat storage mode.

This is why I joined the forum too. I met some really supportive and knowlegeable people who I’m now happy to call my friends. I can share things with the people here that I can’t with people I’ve known my whole life and I’m constantly learning new things.

Don’t be, it just means you’re low on sodium. I never experienced the keto “flu,” because I had seen a couple of videos of Dr. Phinney, in which he talked about it. His advice is broth (preferably home-made bone broth, but commercial stock cubes work in a pinch) once or twice a day. If it’s homemade from your own meat bones, it will likely have potassium and magnesium as well as salt, and all those minerals will keep you well-supplied with salt. The human body needs far more sodium than the U.S. government believes it does, so be generous! Try for between 10 and 15 grams of table salt a day (including what’s already in the food).

Welcome! I’m the only person I know who is eating Keto. My family does not eat this way so I am usually cooking two separate meals most days. Lately now I usually am only eating once a day so it’s getting easier to juggle everything. Enjoy your stay here and good luck :four_leaf_clover:

Monica,

I never got the keto flu but I did feel off for about a week. It wasn’t bad but after research I knew I had to up my salt intake. I used to be a salt aholic so it was just like retuning to my roots.

Thanks for the support everyone! I haven’t been perfect to start but I’m already feeling better just in terms of my stomach issues than I was before starting. I’m focusing mainly on meat and as far as Pepsi, I switched to Zevia. I already sweetened my tea with Stevia so I’m transitioning to that pretty well. I’m hoping to keep feeling better as I go!

Thanks again!!

The keto flu isn’t also so bad. I was just a bit headachey and tired for a little under a week and then on and off for another week (maybe 2 days fine, then a tired day). But I didn’t find it debilitating. Some people don’t get it at all!
I don’t drink coffee because it makes me to anxious, I do matcha every morning. Gives me caffeine and and a gram of fiber lol

(Scott) #14

Keto flu, I get this vision of someone in bed with a thermometer in their mouth in bed with a ice bag on their head. Just deal with it folks, you will feel a bit off and increasing salt helps. You will get past it and it is not that bad. KCKO

Welcome!

One way to get started is to click on Categories on the main menu (what you see when you first arrive) and then go to the Newbies forum and look around. You should see all kinds of useful stuff there.

If you have a question, try searching on it. The search function here works pretty well. If you still can’t find an answer, by all means ask!
