Joe Rogan Experience #1178 Dr Rhonda Patrick - carnivore diet discussion - help please!

(Julian Webber) #1

Yet another great podcast about nutrition from Joe and Dr Patrick. Lots of support for the Keto diet, but also lots of criticism of the carnivore diet.

I got lost in much of the details. Is there anyone out there that can break it down more simply? It seems that the crux of the argument that Dr Patrick was making was the lack of studies into the carnivore diet.

With the incredible reach of the show, it would be a shame that any false or accidentally misleading information would cast shade on the carnivore diet.

Thanks in advance.

Dr Patrick seems afraid of the popularity of the carnivore diet and did some scare mongering… was I’m afraid my take on it. Something of the Dr Berg obsession with greens…

It always strikes me as amusing when someone uses lack of research as a reason not to do something, when most doctors and nutritionists ignore the actual research when giving advice anyway.

(bulkbiker) #4

Could not agree more with that one… dietary guidelines anyone…?

Actually she made some good points and wasn’t trying to scare anyone. She tried to explain what the different micro nutrients that Aa carnivore might lack, do in the body, for example the c and d vitamine. She didn’t say the diet necessarily was dangerous but the lack of research makes it risky to follow a strict carnivore diet, since the long term effects of deficiencies in these micro nutrients might not show until many years later

Its amazing that life existed before the advent of the Whole Foods market.

She is incredibly smart, I will not discount that, but what are we? 3 generations out from the advent of the refrigerator? 1913 for the first home use?

Id like to ask Rhonda how people lived and ate in 1900, 1800, 1700, 1,000,000 yrs ago, 2 million years ago.

She is really not that far away from Ben Greenfield. High dose extracts, obscure modalities, ect.

You will never find through out human history any people adhering to strictly only eating meat or vegetation, it has to do with the ability to adapt to what is available to eat!

From fossilized human fecal records looks like lots of plant matter in the gut flora biome!

(Chris) #8

You will also never find people throughout history eating 10 almonds a day to ensure adequate vitamin E, Broccoli sprouts for the potential benefits of sulforaphane, and main lining grams of Nicotinamide mononulcleotide

That’s true, but that doesnt mean they didnt eat other plant based matter which had similiar micro nutrient profiles as some of todays vegetables and nuts. Rhonda patrick is talking about optimizing health and science that supports that different micro nutrients that are mostly found in plants, are beneficial for your health.

(bulkbiker) #10

But there are equally some nasties in plants that aren’t so good for your health…so saying “Plants good no plants bad” doesn’t actually get us anywhere.
If we can all agree there are no essential dietary carbs then by logic there can’t be any essential dietary plants. If you want to have them then fine but are our bodies so stupid as to need something that they can only get from a non essential foodstuff?

She’s a smart cookie for sure. Baker had a few rebuttal videos come out the same day.

A lot her studies were mouse studies and rat studies. She did acknowledge that there is no long term carnivore human studies, which is true since the Bellevue studies were only a year or two, and there has been nothing since.

The main argument seems to be the lack of long term studies. The funny thing is that she was saying how keto was better because there are so many studies, but if you go back a few years, there weren’t many studies. People started doing in without the long term studies because they felt better on it. Same thing as the carnivore diet. People are doing it because they feel better on it. It isn’t for everyone but it can help some people… same as keto.

I laughed at Rogan at one point - he was talking about Chris Bell, who eats carnivore to deal with AI and arthritis. He was talking about how Bell had both hips replaced in his 30’s, and how Bell feels great on a carnivore diet, but how he thinks Bell is basically making a mistake by avoiding leafy green carbs… I don’t think Rogan realized how contradictory that thinking is.

I think in a few more years, carnivore safety will be a non-issue, just like keto safety has become a non-issue. We just need more time for proof.
