yea me too. have that issue. my little dog was all about taking him out when he was a spring chicken climbing up steep mt trails with me, now that would kill him LOL I find losing him as a companion to handle hard exercise is just so sad for him and me.

just to be out and about. I find I walk less now cause he can’t handle what I want and I got a massive fenced backyard to the fenced horse pastures and barns and he ‘used to walk it all’ checking, now I can barely get him off the back porch just to pee and crap…ugh.

I get that R. we do for them as we gotta do it and it is us who feels that change.

Yes to all the above. My little old guy deserves the right to take it easy. Naps in the sun, then move to the cold tile floor, then the bed, then repeat.

One thing bout my slow walks with him is that I have rediscovered my childhood fascination with what is beneath my feet… sticks, rocks, bugs, etc. And I’m back to barefoot. Good for me too.

It was truly a “birth” day!:smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

The prices are very good and yes the other store try to keep up with Lidl and Aldi but I get a coupon for mo ey off depending what I spend in the month. Sometime I buy from the middle aisle and I buy plants too so if you spend £100 you get a £2.50 coupon and spend £200 you get a £10 coupon. It isn’t that hard for me to spend the latter in a month. I also tend to buy their reduced meat more so than full price and they mark down between 6.30 and 7pm so that’s always a good time to go. Its about being canny and keeping an eye on the use by dates because then you know when to go and see whats being marked down. Thry will mark the down either 30 or 60% depending what shelf life they ha e left. I just chuck it into the freezer so shelf life means nothing to me . I have found the meat to be everybit as good as anywhere else even the butchers. Mind you I only have to walk about 5 or 600 metres if I had to drive an hour I am not so sure it would be cost effective especially with our petrol prices being so steep at the moment. You have to weigh up how far you travel to other places you buy your meT from and also lidl or aldi in the US may be quite different to ours here in blighty.

Stair runs do e this morning g but wasn’t booked onto CrossFit today as I had to get bloods taken same time as class starts. Took all the work clothes and shower kit with me to drop it off at work. Had bloods taken and just outside the surgery is a cafe so I ordered a coffee to go something I rarely do but I could see it was going to be difficult to get one before midday otherwise. Walked around the corner and a homeless guy asked for some money so I looked at him, looked at my coffee and said would you like a coffee as I hadn’t started yo drink it and his eyes lit up and said he would love a coffee so he got my coffee and I thought oh well I will pick one up when I come out the bank at the Costa opposite, (hate costa coffee) so popped across the market place and there was quite a queue waiting so gave that a miss. Went to the prison and dropped my clothes off and thought I will pick up a maccy d’s coffee which is just round corner from prison but i drove straight passed in automatic mode . Picked Raymond up and went back into Beeston to the cafe and i had just told him my coffee story and said first thing i want is a nice coffee and blow me the minute we sat down the waitress came straight over with an early grey tea and I didn’t have the heart to tell her I actually wanted a coffee today  she was so sweet and I think the cafe owner saw us walk in and sent her straight over with it! Nice to be known but it can get in the way of a nice cup of coffee hahaha so I ended up early grey meal coffee in that order and yes it was after midday by this time !.
Brunch was 1 sausage, 2 rashers bacon and a cheese omelette all looks really clean from being done on the griddle, not like my greasy Joe’s offerings hahaha… mine are more tasty though!

I got home about 3.45pm and went straight out for a walk around the nature reserve. Popped into the shops in the retail park on way back, decided to buy a couole of tops and realised at the checkout I had only put change into my pocket for some cheese from M&S and hadn’t brought my card (deliberately hmmm) so the lovely lad on the checkout put them to one side while I walked home and returned with my bank card! Ended up doing just a fraction under 5m.

@fangs the railway cottage … the original part was the front.
Some of the views from the upstairs extension. my photos don’t really do it justice.

Dinner was going to be 3 beef burgers and a rump steak but I wasn’t that hungry so left out the steak. I didn’t get through all the butter on the plate either lol

And another of my bare root roses blooming. The scent from this one is absolutely beautiful very aromatic.

I apparently lost my long comment, oh well, it was mostly fruity anyway, I answered to @JJFiddle but it isn’t important. And I forgot the rest but main thing I just tracked so I have numbers!

Elongated OMAD as one time just isn’t enough, 2 hour eating window, I ate as much as I could!
Guesstimation says 1270 kcal, 362g pork roast, 460g meat in total (a tad above a pound, I had a little brisket and a sausage). 3 boiled eggs, tiny dairy. 58% fat but what is important that my protein is safe, almost 120g. I am perfectly satiated and curious about tomorrow when I plan a very similar plate and we will see.
I have enough pork roast for 3 more days.
Today’s workout was weaker than the last one, we will see if the next one goes better but there are so many factors. My interrupted sleep probably didn’t help. Or my headache.
I started to make squats, without weights as it’s very hard empty too (as always and it didn’t get much harder with 28kg, once I tried that and that was the highest weight I could make without the big bar, that’s not so convenient). I knew I can’t avoid leg exercises forever (though there are way better ones than squats but I do them rarely) and maybe it will help with my cycling. And CO. Aesthetically I don’t particularly care.

It wasn’t a pure carni day for reasons (like, our very first tomato got ripe and it’s totally awesome, I ate half with my pork :D) but almost, I am pleased. I just need to do many such days. Well maybe a bit higher-cal ones but they will happen automatically.

@Karen18
I didn’t know they gave money coupons like that from Lidl. I like earn cash back deals. I will have to think tho cause like you said our gas is skyrocketing here to and is it worth that drive for what I might hit but I think when I am ‘heading that way’ for anything ever again I will then make that effort to go and check them out. Since you buy alot and happy with the quality they are worth a real check soon. thanks

The railway cottage is adorable and darn, that back part is all addition! woof they put some big money and nice effort into remodel onto that home. I love old places being saved and I love those pictures, and viola, there is the railway tracks right there! cool

--------------ribeye yesterday was delish and chicken and 1 small burger patty to boot. Today got a big ol’ Tbone steak ready to go. second meal not sure, I think I will defrost a pack of the thin cut pork chops as my back up for later.

boom, menu covered

(Karen) #110

@Fangs lidl do a phone app which I just scan each time I get to checkout, this tots up what you’ve spent and the coupon gets added as you go. When I redeem it during the week of the following month i can spend it on my shopping and don’t have to spend over a certain amount either. I can’t be fussed with the coupons in some supermarkets that say £2.50 off your next shop when you spend over £25 … wow big deal eh
You need to see if they do they same over with you. X

I got hungry already before 1pm (no wonder considering how little I ate yesterday) and ended up getting hungry again and again though it was soft and not very frequent due to the pork.
Over a pound of pork roast, a sausage, tiny brisket, 7 eggs now but less dairy than yesterday… Maybe 2000 kcal, fat is below 60% again, yeah, lots of lean meat does that to my days…

I start to have enough of this lean stuff though. It’s tender and lovely and I ate a lot but I miss my perfectly fatty pork chuck. So tomorrow I will eat bacon and more sausage and a bit less lean pork.

Weather is still nice and the nights will be cool enough in the near future. We still lack rain.

Last night was stifling so although I nearly got my hours in It was so very wakeful.
Up at 8.30 after a wee trip and changing alarm from 8am lol… of I am crazy dizzy when 8 wake up I know I need more sleep.! Did my stair runs then ran to CrossFit did the Wod and then ran home again and had a nice bath. O had been drenched all night and that continued through all my activities so it was a lovely cool bath!

Had a tel appt with the Stroke psychologist this afternoon which took me passed 2pm so brunch was late. Ate a rump steak with butter. Then started stripping my bedding and when I eventually put the fresh set on, late afternoon I started dripping down my back again! We’ve been forecast 40°+ this weekend!

Cooked a pork shoulder joint and had that for dinner. Watered the plants and now in bed. Taken 2 herbal sleep tablets in hopes they work as I am up for work at 4.45am

Also had some cheddar sliceds, mallish chunk of Hungarian sausage and 1 hard boiled egg.

I was wondering about non-linear progression of health and health recovery. On one day I feel energised and I am charging around the countryside covering miles on a walk. Yesterday I was working at the computer bludgeoning administrative tasks for work, sitting, screen staring, thinking… One of my thoughts was of taking Billie the Labrador for a walk.

Finally I got work under control and by mid-afternoon I was ready to get out and look for ‘calendar plants’ in the Australian bush in my area. They are plants that go into bloom in different seasons. I was hoping to find a native vine that looks like Wisteria, a purple flowering vine called Hovea. I didn’t find any. But I did find a Banksia (colloquially known as Parrot Bush) that was in flower.

But the walking was hard work. It was along some sandy tracks and uphill on the way out. Best thing to do is to let Billie off the leash and she keeps moving ahead and then stops and turns to give a “C’mon” encouragement look to get me to catch up. It was an effort of willpower to take the dog for a proper walk yesterday. In a day or two I will feel like Superman again and be turning around to Billie and say, “C’mon”. And for @Karen18, who will understand the language, “C’mon, no dillydallying.”

This morning. Fasting blood glucose 6.6 mmol/L (119 mg/dl)and fasting blood ketones = 0.2mmol/L. Black coffee with no cream - there’s a change. I’m on the last notch of my belt as my pants were slipping. I have lost another 2.2lbs in a week between two doctor’s visits. Doctor wasn’t too interested.

I had a wonderful rib eye steak two nights ago. Yesterday 2MAD, NoFUN (No Food Until Noon), breakfast of 3 eggs and two rashers of middle bacon with 3 slices of Jarlsberg cheese (note: cheese creep). Dinner was leftovers, as I head up to the city today for a few nights. A bowl of COVID-curing leftover chicken soup, 3 boiled eggs smeared with Castello Blue Cheese (70g). That was quite enough.

View from the top of the hill when winter walking with the dog.

Coastal Banksia.

@FrankoBear
such a wonderful post to read FB! Hey at least Billie waited for ya and gave you encouragement. Many a pooch would lite outta there never looking back HA

last notch on the belt! You are doing it. Living the zc lifestyle and the body gods give you more trim for your efforts. Ever changing, ever progressing, ever in body transiiton on zc. ZC does it on its’ own terms without us worrying about it all.

you mentioned possible cheese creep! If you are one who does well on your amt of cheese then have at it if you enjoy it. Just know your belt is becoming useless even enjoying your cheese, so? Live good, eat good, let zc handle the body changes on its own timeline and just that happen in natural order, then cool. But if you feel cheese might be an issue, problem of any kind then yea address it but never give it too much power in any direction ya know. For me I ate tons of cheese til one day I just started to drop it and use it only when I required it. Like I love a cheeseburger patty vs. a plain burger. But I used to eat some cubes of cheese in my day, now that is long gone so maybe just ‘handle your cheese’ walk as you see fit and again, let zc change it for ya when it does just that?

You know I find when I get stuck with work to handle, a project I am not thrilled with doing or anything that is ‘deemed’ a pain in the arse in my day I find makes me more sleepy. More sluggy. Kinda like a brain dead feeling of blah. When I wake up knowing ‘this is my day’ how I want it to go according to me, I wake up full of vigor and energy, if I know I got ‘crap to handle’ in my day I wake up more like, oh well, what the hell thinking and just drag me thru it LOL

---------got a nice Tbone steak for later.
got 2 thin pork chops in fridge cooked to finish up.
if I need more I got a pack of bacon staring at me that I can put out of its’ misery :sunny:

zc menu covered. easy and just the way I love it!

Hi! I’m new here but not to keto. I read all the last thread on ZC here, so know you a bit (glad your Covid seems to have resolved, FrankoBear). Me: a 20+ year veteran of LC (back then, Eades’ Protein Power, which is almost P:E, but years earlier), off and on, and when I’m off, I mostly eat whole foods and get 100 g of protein, without which I don’t function well…until I fall and usually I can pick myself back up pretty quickly and re-mount the donkey. (horses are too big. I like donkeys! And relate to them.)

I am definitely an addict. But I stay abstinent for years at a time. I guess that’s better than never being so. (?)

Hate doctors, but had blood work 3 x over the past 15 years: Total Chol 170 (US way of measuring), HDL 90-100, Trig 45-49, every single time. Fasting sugar is dandy (77-92 over three tests over 15 years).

I threw the scale out on New Year’s Day 2000, and i have no idea and do not care what I weigh. But I’m not skinny. I should have been a fullback–that kind of build. Only time i had my lean body mass tested, the lean was 148 pounds of me, which ain’t bad for an old gal. I eat from hunger and have no interest in fasting, but y’all should do whatever you like! I like paying attention to my body, which as long as I’m LC, I can trust in its hunger signals.

I’ve been strict keto again since May and ZC for 2 weeks. It’s different! And that is wild because it’s only a difference of 15 total carbs… but it is! I’m sleeping like I haven’t since I was 9, which was nearly 60 years ago, my nails are growing so fast I need a FT manicurist to keep up with it, and after I sleep, I wake up in an instant, no grogginess, ready to take on the world that moment. For the first time in my life, I can take a 10-minute nap and not be groggy for the rest of the day. Of course zero cravings for carbs, which is far more important to me than body size these days.

And, though it seems a petty win, I really appreciate how fast grocery shopping is: grab eggs, grab butter, meat aisle for sale meat, and I’m out of there. 10 minutes max, and I don’t have to read labels.

You seem like a great group, and I look forward to getting to know you better.

(Robin) #116

Love your list of non scale victories. Isn’t the total been e of cravings incredible? besides feeling better than I have EVER, it’s not a struggle at all. Just on to pilot now. Cruising along. Life is good.
Sounds like you got this!

(Judy Thompson) #117

@FrankoBear seems like you were still pretty sick, then SUDDENLY well! Good for you, so relieved to hear about Billie running ahead and encouraging you, welcome back to the land of super energy!
Day before yesterday I started the brisket and some boneless pork ribs on the smoker. The ribs were done in a few hours but the brisket took 22 1/2 hours! I don’t have the temp probe so can’t get phone notifications from this fancy smoker, so set alarms to get up every 2 hours that night and check the smoker. Aargh. Then still walked an hour yesterday morning. Today though, I woke up at 4:30 and didn’t go back to sleep. So I said, no walk today, showered and made coffee and still didn’t get everything done today.

Hubby’s building shelves for the room that was Mom’s and is now my teaching and craft/sewing room. All my music and books will go in there. I hope my clothes still fit in there. Maybe I can get rid of some. There sure are some that are way too big now!

@Keto_Lou Nice to meet you! I’m similar to you in that I’ve been on LC a long time without a great deal of change, until I started zc in January 2022. And, in that I hate weighing, but grudgingly get on the scale every few months. I just hate to think there might not be that much change, which would depress me, and could I then be responsible for my actions? So, no. People notice though and I’m thinking about 50 lbs off.

Gigs - 102 degrees Sunday night, but a nice breeze. I’m hoping it will be easier to play in this heat as we go along. Friday we also played, but it was inside. Tonight I’m hoping we’ll be inside. It’s 99° right now.
Pics coming from the phone:

Brisket.

Sliced brisket. I used salt and a little pepper to season. No oils.

Welcome, @Keto_Lou!

In the end, I didn’t change anything today, ate my usual base and a bit more stuff (more sponge cake muffins, another sausage and some more dairy today):

High-protein, lowish fat but more than a pound of lean meat (just slightly, that cute piece on the plate), of course I get that. It’s super satiating. TMAD as I already felt the need to eat at 3pm.

Definitely a calorie deficit but not a huge one. I think this base works very well. I still want a tad fattier meat in my near future but then I can do this again, nice tender pork, lovely.

@Karen18 about sleep.

I was listening to a new podcast for me for the country to city road trips. It’s out of the UK and called ‘Fabulously Keto’. They were talking to a 55 year old ZC woman who does a lot of training.

The key part of the general discussion about ZC was about experimenting with types of protein food sources, and the amounts of fat and protein macronutrients. Her observation was that her sleep was noticeably sounder on a higher fat macro. That when she upped her protein and ate meat leaner, then she had worsening sleep problems. There was no difference for her work outs and strength in increasing the protein, just more negative effects with sleep as well as some other observations.

This is the episode here:

If you are interested to dive deeper into adjusting sleep there is this really good recent STEM Talk podcast episode. They talk about diet, but also other things like when to get natural light, bed time strategies, light types and darkness, timing of eating etc. it’s a good listen to have a notebook handy.

(Robin) #120

O.M.G. THAT BRISKET! Nailed it.
