I know this has been talked about before, but I’m still co fused about some points when it comes to eating protein on keto.
For instance, today I over-ate a lot (again). My macros are still the same when looked at as percentages (77% fat, 20% protein, 3% carbs), BUT - the grams are way off. I should stay under 90g of protein a day, but today I ate 150g, almost twice as much.
So, my question basically is - does the ratio between fat, protein, and carbs actually matter, or is its purpose more so figuring out the grams? Because my body definitely doesn’t need that much protein, so even if the ratio is correct, it should still try to convert the protein, right?
Or it the whole “protein can slow down/kick you it of ketosis” thing just a myth? Does anyone here have an experience with this they could share?
Thank you very much for your time!
Is too much protein bad on keto?
I really think it is an individual thing. If you are still new, eat what protein you want. It’s very healing for the system to eat a lot of protein. If you crave it, you need it. Once adapted after about 6 months, people seem to know their sweet spot and what throws them off. I think as long as you keep your carbs low, you’re helping your body adapt to ketosis.
Chris here’s a good article on protein which may help you to understand its importance when doing Keto. Too little will cause problems and too much will too.
I personally would stick the most possible to the recommended quantity of proteins and carbs in g/day for your lean body mass, and get to satiety with more fats.
Thank you for the information everyone, it was very helpful :). I finally understand how this works, and how to take better care of my body, so I’m very grateful!
Protein is a target, and being a little over or under is not that big a deal. However, too little protein causes wasting of the muscle, and too much stimulates insulin secretion. A great deal too much causes potentially fatal ammonia toxicity.
Check out @Daisy ‘s Keto Woman Podcast with Georgia EdeThe guest talked about her journey and how lowering protein at one point helped her out. Overall sure seems like an individual thing like the previous folks replying have said.
