Is Kerrygold butter organic?

(Michele Wilson) #1

Hi everyone, I know this is probably dumb question but… Is Kerrygold butter organic and/or grass fed? Thanks!

Milk from grass-fed cows.

But the cows could potentially be on antibiotics? That’s been my main concern. Thanks for the reply

Possible, I suppose. But seems unlikely for a farmer or company who gets the advantage of grass-fed to go with antibiotics. Also less likely to even be necessary. As I understand it the reason farmers give their cows antibiotics is that feeding them with grain makes them sick.

You could probably find out by using the contact form:

Their fact sheet says no hormones.

Original question was around antibiotics. Unfortunately, they probably can’t say they don’t give their cows antibiotics, because they might need to if an animal gets sick, so hard to say other than my earlier point that cows eating grass regularly are less likely to need to be medicated.

Usually, an animal that gets antibiotics is quarantined and taken out of the milk supply for a certain amount of time. Allows them to heal and time to get the hormones out of their system.

They are suposed to do the same for meat animals as well.

Yes! I read that as part of the regulations for USDA organic products, but Kerrygold doesn’t have that label. I’m disappointed because it’s sooooo freaking good!

It’s an Irish product. Usually, European regulations are tighter than the USDA.

Just like I would buy Italian products without concern since they do not allow GMO in the country.

Any animal that is treated with antibiotics is removed from the herd and all of their milk is dumped. They are quarantined until the antibiotics is COMPLETELY out of their system.

It is a common misconception that antibiotics are present in non-organic milk/dairy, and this is simply not true. And in my view, I would find it to be pretty heartbreaking if a cow was truly ill and was not allowed to be given antibiotics or medicine.

If I’m not mistaken, all lipids contain carbon, in addition to hydrogen (yes yes, I know but it’s the “Sheldon Cooper” in me).

can a farm from outside the USA be deemed organic by the USDA? That might be the issue.

(jilliangordona) #13

No, it cannot.
