Is it possible to lose too much?

#1

I’m not even close to being in danger of this, but, is it possible to lose too much weight one Keto? It seems, from reading here, that we tend to stabilize after a while.

Can't find topic on losing too much (lol)

From other people’s accounts I think this is almost always true, Todd, and that they end up eating an overall reduced amount at their lower weight, often substantially less.

This, then, is truly the best WOE isn’t it?

People are starting to ask me me if, perhaps, I haven’t lost enough by now. I smile, wink, and say, “I’ll stop when my wife complains.” But, she’s doing this with me.

For those of us who have gotten to a relatively bad place from too many carbohydrates, I sure think so.

I was actually thinking of raising this subject on a new thread before seeing this. I have been keto now for six and a half months. I’m eating this way for my arthritis and not weight loss, but I have lost 23lbs. The problem with this is that I’m easily at what I would consider my ideal weight a few pounds back. I’m 5ft 7" tall and 129lbs, female and in my early 40s. I go about a month at a time losing no weight then over a weekend I will lose 3 to 4 pounds at once.

I realize that a calorie is not a calorie except when it is lol … But an online calculator said I should be consuming 1743 to maintain (using that as a rough guide). At the start of this diet I found it very hard to eat anything close 1000 calories (sometimes a lot lower). Later on (4 months in) my appetite increased and if eating to satiety then I would be eating 1200. So now I try very hard some days to eat up to 1700 but then the next day I will eat breakfast but then can’t face lunch at all and find it very hard to eat a small dinner. Those days work out at around 800 ish, EEEK! So that isn’t working. I am worried that I will continue to lose weight now as I really don’t need to, but I just can’t seem to eat more. Has anyone else experienced this? And will my weight really stabilize even though I can’t seem to eat enough? I’m starting to get a tad worried about it.

Before Keto I could of eaten unlimited food without any bother. Just in case anyone thinks I was always a small eater or something.

Great questions. I don’t know the answers but eagerly await the replies.

I think you’ll be fine if you listen to your hunger. Unless you are taking something that suppresses appetite?

As I’ve lost weight, my usual OMAD hunger signals went from a stately, ‘ok let’s eat now’ at lunch time, to a ravenous ‘GIVE ME ALL THE MEAT - NO MORE SALT LICKS FOOL.’

I refuse to use calculators, graphs, trackers and only use the internet to find the nutritional info for things without labels.

I hope you’re right @Dipper_Actual. This WOE has been nothing short of a miracle for me with regards to pain and inflammation. I hate to have to up the carbs to stabilize my weight. I intend to give it at least a couple of more months before I start to really panic.

I don’t take any appetite suppressants. I love all the tracking stuff online. Lets me refer back if I get some inflammation so I can see what it was I was eating the previous few days. I take the calorie intake calculators as a very rough guide though.

This is where I am struggling as well. On day 22 of Keto and at times am barely hitting 1000 cals. I am just simply not hungry like I used to be :woman_shrugging:

Are you close to your ideal weight @bunny6? It is hard to eat as you are just not hungry, but as long as you still have fat to burn I don’t think there is anything to worry about. A couple of weeks ago I took to drinking double cream to get those calories up LOL. VERY tasty but I don’t think it would of worked as a long term strategy.

This might sound counter intuitive but you could try eating less often, skip breakfast maybe a 4-500 calorie lunch then have a generous dinner. I’m eating at maintenance now and I don’t eat at all during the day and then eat pretty much what I like at dinner / in the evening. Restricting the time period I eat in seems to have worked for me to get the right amount of food in.

(Lesley) #12

Hey @Duncan_K that’s an interesting thought. I would be up for trying that. That’s a lot of eating in one evening meal though. But I could give it a try.

(Duncan Kerridge) #13

Not when you’ve not eaten all day :grinning: I do snack a bit in the evening as well, nuts and 100% chocolate

(Lesley) #14

@Duncan_K

I’ve just been duped, methinks, into fasting :grin:

Oh I have to be careful with nuts. Too easy to eat too many.

#15

I eat a couple handfuls of macadamia nuts and often some Keto chocolate mousse that my wife keeps handy for me. Extra fat and it soothes my sweet tooth to boot.

(Duncan Kerridge) #16

I guess … i’ve never eaten breakfast on keto and I just find it great now to not have to think about food until the evening.

#17

Yep and not doing Keto to lose weight. 120lbs 5’4 active female.

(matt ) #18

I would say I lost too much. I am just under 6 feet tall and I got down to 157. I relaxed a bit and I sit around 175 now. I like it here.

I got really thin.

(Lesley) #19

@bunny6 Ah yes you are light enough as it is!

(Lesley) #20

Wow, that is a lot to lose. You must of been worried at the time. When you say you relaxed a bit what do you mean @matt ?
