Is it normal to fluctuate?

Hi,

I think I’m just after a little reassurance that a few lbs back on is no reason to panic? I lost 7lb in the first two weeks, weighed this morning (a month in) and have put 2lb back on. Even though this still leaves me with an overall loss it’s a bit disheartening. I never go over 20 net carbs, I’m usually way under. Is a few lbs up normal whilst I’m still adjusting or have I messed something up? Keto sticks always show fairly dark, so all seems fine on that side of things. I don’t have a massive amount to lose, so I am expecting it to be slow, which is also why 2lb back on is a bit of a kick in the teeth.
My measurements aren’t changing - I was going to rely on the tape more than the scales, but no change there either.

Perfectly normal, especially if you’re female as hormones are up and down throughout the month.

(Lindsey) #3

I am female. That’s good to know, thanks.

Because ketosis causes us to lose fluids and electrolytes, rehydrating (drinking fluids) can cause weight fluctuations much more than you might see in people who are eating a SAD.

Did you happen to be in lipogenesis yesterday? Was your glycogen full? Did you overeat at least 7,000 calories above your daily requirements? If not, it’s merely water flux. It’s really hard to regain fat, it’s really an adaptive process requiring chronic Carb intake over a fairly long period. On the other hand, it’s easy to flux water. If you really want to, you can easily flux 10 pound in a day with a combination of water and glycogen.

It would be abnormal if your weight did not fluctuate. Here’s mine:

very nice

how did you do that

I guess blue tooth scale

(Lindsey) #8

That’s a cool visual - how often were you weighing?

(Jenn Monaghan) #9

I plugged my weight into MyFitnessPal, about once a week. I’ve been keto for about 16 months now.

Although it’s micro management, I would highly recommend Bluetooth scales if you feel daily tracking would suit your personality.

For me as above, you get much more insight and in my opinion can ‘react’ sooner with daily tracking. But that’s what suits me; my friend only wants to weigh in once per week.

Very normal, especially for women. Hormones, hormones, hormones.
This is how my weight loss goes: lose 2 pounds, gain three over the next few days, lose 1, lose 1/2, lose 1, lose 1, gain 2, etc, rinse and repeat. I end up a new lower weight about once a week now. I am almost 5 months keto. Try not to let it upset you. Weight loss is not linear for us, just up and down with a gradual trend downward. Hang in there.

Thanks.

:+1:

(Lindsey) #14

I HATE weighing, so I do it as little as possible.

(Diane) #15

I find this to be absolutely true even when weighing weekly. Or less often.

#16

Yep. It’s frustrating to be sure.

#17

Here is my last month, and notice the 2+ pound gain from yesterday which is definitely water/hormones.

(Lindsey) #18

Another week, another lb back on. :frowning:

Weight loss is not linear and gains are part of the process.
This is my chart in Cronometer
