I lived on Atkins back in the day (25 years ago to 14 years ago) because I have PCOS and it was the only thing that controlled my symptoms and I discovered not only weight loss, feeling better, but it is a huge contributor to beating infertility (two wonderful neuro-divergent kids). I regained a lot of weight after having my son because as a new mom prepping foods and such just wasn’t happening. Then 12 years ago ( 13 years in August) I had an RNY Gastric Bypass as my endo for the PCOS told me it pretty much puts the PCOS into remission. It worked I got to see what it feels like to be able to lose weight normally, to not have all the PCOS symptoms…I felt great until I had my daughter ( who is now 9) I ended up with Fibromyalgia ( which of course like the PCOS, took drs forever to figure out) but although I gained some weight back it was more controlled than what PCOS does and other than excess skin from having been near 400 lbs, I was happy with myself ( not the fibro pain, that always sucks but is another story).
My family suffered Arsenic poisoning about a year ago so that is what I thought caused me to suddenly gain 70ish lbs in the last 6 months…it is mostly in the belly so the Drs thought Cushings, or Ovarian cancer, My A1C’s went from 4,8 to 6.1 in under a year. I started needing 10+ hours of sleep ( not good with a disabled husband, 2 kids on the Autism spectrum and I work more than full time). I finally got in with a good dr who did all the tests I needed and the U/S to rule out the cancer. The verdict Friday afternoon was that it is my PCOS rearing it’s ugly head. So my dr put me on a few things ( Metformin which I had taken way back when, Spirolactone) and said “best for you is the Ketogenic diet but I warn you it is very difficult.” I was like…I did that for years when it was laughed at by most people and called Atkins, is that all it will take to feel better? Sign me up. So I was going to wait until Monday ( all diets start on a Monday) but then I woke up Saturday thinking why am I going to delay my healing and feeling better?
The ALREADY!?! part is it has only been about 36 hours into the WOE and I have the fruity taste in my mouth and I can feel the start of Keto-flu ( so making broth to help) I remember it taking a week or two to get to this point so I am just surprised to have this so soon, maybe my body is eager to get back to this and heal.
Intro ( and ALREADY?!?!)
Glad you are returning to the ketogenic diet.
It can and will heal you.
I have to ask. Arsenic poisoning from what?
The well water where we were living, we didn’t drink it ( even tho we were told it was safe, just salty because it had a softener on it) but we used it for washing our dishes, our clothing, and baths ( which with the Fibro, I took a lot of)
Holy cow re arsenic poisoning - scary. Great you are back on board.
Have you tested your vitamin D level recently? Reason I ask is that it is worth getting your levels up with fibro. Fibro and other AI disorders often are associated with low levels of D.
I do think the body heaves a sigh of relief to get back to keto.
Wow, you have a plate full. So sorry you’ve been through so much but I believe keto will help you immensely. I’m glad you had a doctor who knew enough to recommend it, though I disagree on the difficult part.
I do supplement Vit D because of the Fibro they tested a few years ago and I was low ( same with my daughter, who has a pediatric fibro, and husband, who has chronic migraines)
Do you take a good whack of a dose? Back up to good levels now? I would want to be at at least 50 if I were you.
