Interesting week, large weight fluctuations

Last weekend I finally picked up some batteries for my scale. Went Keto July 8th and been solidly at ever since. I will say though my results are positive, I am disappointed with the amount lost so far, although I’m in it for the long run so as long as I eventually get to my target I will be happy. So I weighed myself Sunday, I noticed I was up 2lbs from my Dr. visit from several weeks ago. I know all scales are different but at the Dr. I had shoes on, at home I didn’t. Either way, it just got me more focused. So Monday , and Tuesday I really kept track of my intake and made sure I was under on my carb macro and also spent 30 minutes on my elliptical each night. Wed. hit and lunch went well but we went to a party that evening. I struggled to find something to eat and ended up with a half a cup of chili (it had beans) , two hot dogs and an ounce of bourbon. Oddly enough Thur. morning I was down a total of 6lbs for the week. Thursday I got back to normal eating routine and again was below my carb intake, then this morning got on the scale and was up 5lbs. I was shocked to see that, at least I’m down over all for the week, as little as it is.
Oh, and about two weeks I started drinking bullet proof coffee instead of eating breakfast. I have 10oz of that (butter, coconut oil, tsp of heavy cream) then 10oz of just regular coffee with a tbls of heavy whipping cream then when I get to work I take a 30oz mug with 3 tbls of heavy whipping cream and coffee. I’m up at 5:30am and don’t eat anything until 10:00 , I just had a stick of hunter sausage.

We can/will have some good sized weight differences on a daily basis. However, 6lb down yesterday, and 5lb up today is too extreme I think.

I would look at how/what time you are weighing and, check your scales accuracy!

Same time, same amount of clothing on and in a marked place on the floor. I’d like to think the scale could be suspect since moving it do different areas has an effect but I marked this place on the floor and it will give me three consistent readings so even if the weight might be off vs another scale the amount this one changes is relative.

I have found two foods (so far) that will cause my weight to fluctuate wildly from one day to the next (3 to 6 lbs- definitely water weight!): Boar’s Head smoked Gouda (from the deli, I’m okay with other brands) and anything mayonnaise based that has canola or soybean oil in it. These two foods seem to be very inflammatory for me.

You might have a similar food sensitivity that you are unaware of. Just a thought.

Good luck figuring this out!

I’d drop the bulletproof coffee and the breakfast. Or have bulletproof coffee but skip lunch, at least 2-3 days per week. That’s how I transitioned into long-term fasts. Now, I almost never eat breakfast unless I’m out with others.

I can’t tell you the number of times I looked at the scale and said, “What?”. For instance, I worked my butt off doing a home improvement project, two days in a row – and gained several pounds.

I usually only get high amounts of weight loss/gain when fasting or coming off a fast, though. For instance, I can gain/lose 5-7 pounds in a day. If I eat every day, my weight is more stable.

I usually weigh myself in the morning (only) with no clothes, watches, etc., on. That way, it’s the most accurate.

Yeah, I’m thinking cheese might be the issue. That night at the party I ate quite a bit of the sliced cheese they had there. At least two ounces.
I had stopped eating it, then it slowly crept back into my regiment.

Hi Chuck. I’m in agreement with what others have said. I generally cast a wary eye when there’s a big swing one way or the other. I don’t gain or lose several pounds in a day or two unless I’m retaining water due to inflammatory foods or I’m using untrustworthy scales.

I only weigh 1x per week on the same hospital scale at Urgent Care to avoid problem 2, and I eat ultra clean for a week to cure problem 1.

If you are fat adapted you can reduce the amount of fat you are consuming. That means try cutting out the extras that you try to add to things like heavy cream and still consume fatty meat, eggs, nuts etc. I think I read 60/35/5 is a good ratio to burn fat at once you are fat adapted.

I have a hundred dollar scale and weigh every morning after peeing at same time of day and stripped, buck naked. I refuse to weigh my underwear and Apple watch.

On weekends of eating about 35-40 carbs I can still gain 3-4 pounds. On 22/2 OMAD I can drop 1-1.5 pounds per day. I am normally in small to moderate ketones on pee strips.

Then I water fast 36 to 48 hours once or twice during the week and can drop 4+ pounds. And then back up a couple of pounds upon refeeding. My goal is to net lose about 1.5 to 2 pounds per week. Extended fasting 36-48 hours and beyond is only way I can lose permanent fat weight and inches.

That all said, hydration and dehydration levels are my biggest culprit in sudden, dramatic weight loss/gain. Pressing on my shins in the morning is my best indicator.
