This is my fourth day on the full keto diet. Last night I had “Negative” ketones but at about 4:AM this morning I had “Small.” Just now (1:30 PM), I was back to “Negative” but I’ve only had 4 carbs since testing this morning. What gives?

Thanks!

This might explain.

Are you using the urine strips? I’ve been doing Keto for a month and only once registered about trace. But I am losing weight so just hang in there. And these articles are great.

Its ok relax
At the point you are at, depending upon your previous diet you are just getting things rolling. If you are using uring strips your body is not getting ride of any excess ketyones and that is what you are seeing on those. Your liver can only upregulate ketosis so quickly if you have not done it much before, and your cells are going to use all of those ketones as quickly as they are made in the first week or so. It takes around 2 weeks to get fully adapted to ketones at which point your liver is making extra, and you are well on your way to fat adaption the next stop.
Keep your carn intake below 20g a day
bring your salt intake up (to about 1-2 teaspoons a day)
keep hydrated esp for the next two weeks.
It will all happen in good time, don’t fret or you will raise cortisol and that will raise insulin.

From what i understand… when you first start the keto that’s when the strips “matter” but once your body starts to use the ketones instead of get rid of them you start producing what you need and not wasting them  That’s why I bought a bloood monitor and that has saved my brain from not knowing.

Its actually the opposite, your body will only waste(as in dump) a very minimal amount at first. The sticks are designed to detect ketoacidosis and although we are getting ride of some ketones we are not getting ride of many so they don’t pick up on it well. As your liver up regulates more and more become available, this is normally when the good feeling, and extra energy start to pick up. The ketones you read on a pee strips need to be converted once more to see what you are seeing on the blood monitor(acetoacetate to BHB) and they release acetone which is what you see on the breath monitors.
