In Keto for two years and now gaining weight

(Jennifer ) #1

Hello all,

I am new to this site, but have been doing keto for over two years. I have an autoimmune disorder and it was recommended by my doctor. I have had fantastic results with a 70lb weight loss and my immune system calming down. My whole family now does keto (my kids are adults). Over the summer I started eating higher than 25 net carbs, but not over 50, and started not feeling good again so I dropped back down. Since I have gone back down, I have started gaining weight and am up 10lbs. I checked my blood and I am consistently below 100 on blood sugar and am reading at 1.5 in the keto blood strips, but I have lost nothing. I feel super bloated all the time. I had my doctor run a blood panel and everything looks good. I am stumped. Any thoughts?

Are you doing any type of Intermittent fasting?
Have you done any type of tweaking to change things up?
Any new foods introduced to your rotation?

Try to literally write down everything It might give you some clues as to what is going on - like carb creep. I agree with Ernest - have you tried IF and EF? Welcome here, and I wish you well…

Forgot to mention - you might need to cut nuts, seeds, dairy for a while. And, are you snacking? If so, you might cut that out and see what happens.

(Jennifer ) #5

Yes, I have tried IF and it seems to make it worse, which I though was weird. I have everything in my fitness pal and haven’t seen anything that would cause this.

(Jennifer ) #6

Don’t do much seeds or nuts at all, but I may have to cut dairy.

(Ernest) #7

Try that.
Are you taking any measurements or trying out tight clothes? You might just be regulating to a favorable weight. Body knows what it wants.
Scale might go up while yo get smaller. Get another form of tracking progress as a second opinion.

Have you added in a new food, or more of a particular vegetable? I am wondering about a food intolerance.

It seems to me that a weight gain under your circumstances is hormonal. Some of the things that come to mind are menopause, pregnancy and thyroid. You don’t say what kind of autoimmune condition you have but that could also be the factor.

Girl, I had to really cut dairy.

Amazing !

How can you post your MFP data ?

How many carbs are you on now ?

I literally had to do an extended fast of several days to get my breakthrough. My blood glucose numbers went, which scared me, then they started the steady decline. It took several EF.

Have you changed artificial sweetener per chance? The pilot of Obesity Code podcast talks about a person who stopped losing, and it was the stevia she was using causing the issue, otherwise all was great. She dropped the stevia and started doing fasting under IDM’s guidance, and she is continuing to lose successfully. I have no issues with stevia, but other ASs can cause me a lot of misery. We are all different when it comes to ASs. I am slowly losing all the sweetened treats, I never did a lot of them. In maintenance now, so really not wanting to get used to treats ever again.
Expect for my chocolate fat bombs of course. :sunglasses:

No change in sweetners.

Here is a typical day
Breakfast - Almond milk with 1tbs mtc oil and 1 scoop Bipro Protien Powder
Lunch - homemade chicken salad with mayo, celery, and pickles.
Snack - babybel
Dinner - 2 grilled chicken thighs and an avocado. Or 6 buffalo wings with salad made with lettuce and blue cheese dressing.

That protein powder raises a flag for me, is it whey? That can be insuligenic.

(Jennifer ) #16

WHEY PROTEIN ISOLATE (MILK), COCOA PROCESSED WITH ALKALI, NATURAL FLAVORS, SUNFLOWER LECITHIN, STEVIA EXTRACT.

I am not sure what insulinogenic means.

(Liz ) #17

Whey, in some people, provokes an Insulin response. It’s something to try eliminating if you are stalled out.

(Jennifer ) #18

Even if I have been doing it every day for over a year?

(Liz ) #19

I have no idea, I’m just giving you a suggestion for something to try that I’ve seen other people mention.

Thanks
