I'm so irritated

(Kellie) #1

I just realized most things Iv been eating have sugar or dextrose in them… salami , bacon, sasauge. That’s probably why I have stalled in weightloss because of the darn sugar :frowning: I feel like Iv totally wasted time and money because now I can’t return the stuff I bought in bulk .

(Jo) #2

Keep calm and Keto On. I would surmise that the sugar carb count in those products is tiny. I don’t think it’s something to get upset about unless you are super sensitive to sugar. My thought is that the cortisol that you produce by getting irritated probably raises your insulin more than the half gram of sugar that is in a slice of bacon. Just use up what you have, live and learn and buy something without added sugar next time you shop.

(LeeAnn Brooks) #3

If you purchased at Costco you can return it.

(Olivia) #4

Hidden sugar is annoying and very difficult to avoid. However, what matters is the amount you are eating. I’m guessing we are talking about 1-2 g extra carbs per serving on top of your incidental carbs. That’s still really low compared to a standard diet. You don’t have to throw that food away, just be more mindful of the amounts you are consuming. I’d definitely recommend you start weighing those food items instead of eyeballing portion sizes.

(Kellie) #5

Unfortunately I don’t have a Costco membership. I was shopping at Walmart because everything was much cheaper than at more organic places I was shopping at ( Whole Foods , sprouts )

(Kellie) #6

Good to know! Thank you, I was so bummed

(Sophie) #7

@Ketokellie I think you’re like most people in that you where not aware of how prolific sugar is in your food (or across the board, for that matter). So, it’s great that you posted this for so many others that don’t realize it either. At least not until you actually start reading labels of the stuff that you buy. Seriously, that’s one of the best single things the US ever did for it’s people was to mandate labeling.

(Kellie) #8

I think it’s awful how they hide things through like using big words that still mean sugar like come on. When I started keto I only cared about carbs and fat and that’s all I looked at not the ingiridents . My next shopping trip will be much different !

(Sophie) #9

Yes, it’s easier to just buy whole foods and cook it. I’m the queen of leftovers and packing lunch when I used to work from the home.

(Steve) #10

E-mail Walmart customer service if you want to return it (but, as others noted, chances are the carb count’s not that high). Chances are they’ll take it back, even without a receipt if you explain.

Yes there is almost always some kind of junk/sugar in anything processed. While I am in the beginning stages of doing keto, I won’t eat pepperoni or salami which I like a lot, but refuse to give up the bacon! Does all bacon have sugar? I’ll have to go check my stash.

Ketokellie, I think Jo is right that getting upset about it is worse than eating a little here and there. At least these foods can last awhile and you can eat them over time.

First of all, i’m not calling you out personally  I see a lot of “food fear” going on when it comes to Keto folks - and I fail to see where all this fuss is coming from. Not necessarily from you - just seems to be a theme I have noticed.

I’ve been eating Salami as a basic food staple for 2 years of Keto. Pepperoni isn’t as great of a deal cost-wise, so I eat less (but still a lot) of that. But macro-wise, it’s fantastic.

If there is sugar in this stuff, they’re hiding it well. The “Mama Cozzi” Pepperoni from Aldi is 0 carbs… Plenty of fat, moderate protein… The Aldi’s “Lunch Mate” Genoa Salami - same deal basically. Very high fat, moderate protein, low or no carbs.

Where’s the problem?

Now, I understand the whole movement behind “real food” - and that’s fantastic. And in a perfect world, real food would be a cheap option for absolutely everyone. And maybe I’m on the fast track to becoming the new Toxic Avenger with the aldi’s processed crap that I eat. But if this stuff has been fitting my macros just fine for two years, and my bloodwork keeps coming back fantastic, someone tell me - what should I be worried about?

I’ve been told by butchers that during “curing” meats undergo a bit of fermentation, thus using up that bit of sugar. Personally, I’ve never had a bg response to these kinds of cured meats.

Karl, thank you for explaining this. I’m new here and still in awe of all the fantastic information I am getting here. I have been off and on low carb for years, but never understood the importance of adding (a lot) of fat. So, I’m still learning and appreciate all I am learning here. Thanks again.

(Jerrett Scott) #15

I didn’t realize salt packets had sugar in them. There is sugar in practically everything!!!

(Karl) #16

You’re welcome - that said, my question is actually a pretty serious one  I do wonder about what people think about it. The way I see it - based on how I did keto for the past 2 years - “Perfect Macros with a sketchy source” trumps “Perfect source with sketchy macros”.

My point is - if we collectively as a society ate a ketogenic macro ratio, overall public health would probably improve dramatically - REGARDLESS of the food source. Even if all we ever did was drink Corn Oil mixed with a wee bit of protein powder.

Thankfully, we don’t live in a world where that’s required - we have a lot more food available. Still, I’ve eaten my “junk” for 2 years and lost 140lb doing it (and I’m not gonna lie - it was pretty amazing eating all that salami.) I seriously think it’s just more important to get the macros right - and that everything else will probably fall into place for a lot of people.

And of course, I might just be one of those “unicorns.”

I guess I have the same outlook here as I do using Ketone strips all the time.

As long as it has less than 2 grams of sugar per serving, then I will buy/eat it. More than that I find something else. Occasionally I’ll get something with 4 grams of carbs/sugars per serving, but this is rare.

I don’t stress the 2 grams of carbs / sugars in some salami or a hot dog. A teaspoon or two of MCT oil will counteract that in seconds…

I stress less, and Keto on…

(Kellie) #18

I honestly mostly just eat a ton of cheese sticks (string cheese ) and then bacon , eggs and avacado, I’m hardly hungry and I have lost weight on keto but freaked out when I saw the sugar in stuff Iv been eating and was wondering if that may be the cause for my platue I’m currently experiencing (2 weeks no weightloss )

(Angelica Lopez) #19

Sorry sweetie. I fell into the same trap when I was new to keto years ago. I made the mistake of only looking at the nutrition facts and not the actual ingredients. It stalled me for many weeks and I almost gave up before I realized what was wrong. As soon as I eliminated all the dextrose and maltodextrin that was hiding in everything, even plain old salt, the weight started dropping off beautifully. As minimal as these ingredients may be, some of us won’t tolerate it well and it will cause a stall. Keto can be a learning process, but once you have it down to a personal science, you will easily reach your goals.

(grace elizabeth) #20

Could you explain, please? I’m new here and have so much to learn!

I do have some MCT oil but prefer coconut oil instead.
