Iifym?

In Tips From Oldtimers, BrendaZorn says (about people who you should ignore while KCKO),

“They may state that you practice “IIFYM Keto” in an attempt to make themselves feel superior. (IIFYM = If It Fits Your Macros).”

Yes, I am definitely ignoring everyone who has a problem with my way of doing keto, and thank you for the validation!! But I’m curious: why would it be bad to eat IIFYM? Isn’t meeting your macro guidelines the whole point? What are they referring to that’s supposedly inferior??

Good for you, Karen. Finding what works best for you is the most important thing.

Yeah - I’d think that staying with one’s macros is a good thing, nothing to be looked down upon. Is there some other mystical Keto that the unworthy are not aware of? :slightly_smiling_face:

I think some people go to extremes within the consideration of macros - get focused on certain details to a fault. Some of threads on Reddit and Facebook, for example, have people screaming at each other over minutiae that is not really important or they’re not cognizant of the fact that there can be wide ranges that fit varying individuals.

Really limiting carbohydrates is very important for keto. Yet the exact mix of fats and proteins may be substantially different - some people do better with a lot more protein than others. Even a given individual may change over time - weight loss, hormonal balance and activity levels can alter things a lot.

I’m thinking that some people “get religion” about diet, that they’ve now “seen the light,” and all who disagree with a certain, exact formula are forever damned.

I think that it also has to do with the quality of food that is eaten to fit your macros. For example, if your daily carbohydrate intake is 20g, you can meet that with 20g of spoonfuls of processed white sugar, or you can eat avocados, which are more optimal for your body. If your daily protein is 100g, you can drink sketchy, processed protein powders in the form of shakes all day to meet that, or you can eat beef, eggs, fish, etc., which are more nutritous.

Hello, grapefruit, my old friend. That is my absolutely most favorite word in the french language.

I was thinking maybe this was what they meant, in other words doing your best to eat the same old unhealthy stuff, just in different percentages. In that case I can see why it might be criticized, but as everyone’s always saying, you do you, I’ll do me.

That’s my understanding of IIFYM.

“I can eat this half banana for 20g, even though I am using my whole carb allowance in one snack”
