Iifym

Hi everyone, just had a huge fight on a group about “iifym keto” and some foods being “not keto.” Is this a thing? Are there really things you can’t eat on keto? Or is it all about keeping carbs under 20g? Thanks y’all

I’m new and learning but what is lifym? Good questions, I’d like to know those answers as well.

The more people involved in Keto, the more Keto Nazi’s there are. It can go from not drinking diet soda to anything not what i’m doing is wrong. Many groups have this idea that every food must meet the ‘macro’s’ such as less than 5% carbs. To me Keto is about being in ketosis, if you eat something and are in ketosis afterward then you are keto. If you eat something that takes you out of ketosis and you understand that and go back into ketosis, you are keto. These people make it harder for everyone and is the main reason people think it is too hard and too restrictive.

That is a key benefit, and downfall in my opinion, there is no ‘right’ way, no Atkins-esque rule book that says exactly what is in keto and what isn’t.

To be in ketosis, we generally agree that under 20g of carbs per day will guarantee it. Some people can handle up to 50g and some can go to 100g (generally very active people).

If you’re a 20g keto’er and a chocolate chip cookie has less than 20g of carb, you could call it “keto” if you stay away from any additional carbs for the day, but if you’re able to handle 50g of carb, you could eat the cookie and still have another ~30g of carb and still be in ketosis…

We’re all individual and n=1 is a strong part of doing nutritional ketosis. I don’t look as food as being keto or non-keto. I look at total carbs and work out what I should shoot for to remain in ketosis…and yes, I have the odd chocolate chip cookie and milk with the kids.

It’s all about avoiding insulin spikes which in insulin resistant people have a very slow decay. Staying under 20gr of carbs generally does it. However, 20gr of simple carbs in one sitting is worse than 20gr of complex carbs spread out over 2-3 meals… Finally, for someone to argue with you over whether a good is keto is quite silly. Foods fit on a spectrum and there’s no magic line IMHO. Start with the guidelines, less than 20gr. Track progress and experiment. As you learn to listen to your body w/o the screaming blood sugar rollercoaster you’ll figure out what works for you. I would raise my cortisol level arguing with someone about this… It’s not keto!:stuck_out_tongue:
