Hi,
First time posting! I have lost 10kg over the last year with LCHF eating. I have been maintaining since December and wanted to jump start that last 5 kg so decided to do some 24 fasts, which I did for 3 non consecutive days last week. It actually went just fine and I was pleased with how it went UNTIL the weekend, when some demon propelled me into high carb, junk food eating for several days. I was shocked! I am settling back into low carb again but concerned that I did something wrong with the fasting. Any thoughts about what may have happened?
IF destabilized my LCHF eating?
My first thought it you didn’t eat enough fat to stay satiated for the 24 hours. I made that mistake once and ended up screwing up. You definitely want to eat enough food (and good fat). In fact, until you get the hang of it, maybe go a little overboard with the butter, olive oil, avocado, etc. Also pay attention to what exactly triggered the carb binge. Was your family eating pizza in front of you? Were your coworkers insisting you eat the kolache and donuts? Try changing up your routine to keep distracted for the first couple of days. Go walking for 45 minutes at a park you’ve never been to before.
What demon would that be? Avoid it going forwards. If you don’t know the demon’s name, then go back through what you were eating and figure that out.
It is always a good idea to have keto snacks handy for when hunger sneaks up on you.
Fasting has never propelled me into eating junk foods. I might go overboard a tad with macadamia nuts or salami slices, but not carbage.
Good luck sorting it out.
Same experience here. If anything if I have a problem because I did not eat enough before the fast it shows up during the fast not after. Usually after a fast I am less hungry and can resist cravings better
I agree. I would diary what you had eaten before and during the weekend. I think it was Dr. Adam Nally that said that a craving can be triggere up to 3 days after the food was consumed. Are you sensitive to sugar? If you are then look for hidden carbs like maltodextrin
I have some thoughts on this. You mention you lost 10 kg so far on LCHF over a year long period and then maintained it since December (which is an accomplishment!). Then you said you “wanted to jump start that last 5 kg”. How did you come up with that 5 kg being the “last”? If your body does not agree with 5 kg more because you are trying to jump from what your body thinks is just enough protective fat down to supermodel or fitness model range (which they can usually only really maintain for a photo shoot or show) I could see how your body would respond by sending out a demon to get what it wants. I would try sticking with your old LCHF plan and see if you get the same resistance on moving down in weight.
Very insightful, thank you. My BMI is normal now but wanted to decrease fat reserves further (I’ve got room). I think I will restabilize with LCHF for the next few weeks and see where I am. Fasting is exciting, though!
@collaroygal Amen, sister!
