I was asked, "Send me info on the diet"

#1

A friend asked me to send her info on the diet due to my success thus far.

My first though was to refer her to Fung’s The Aetiology of Obesity you tube videos, but I don’t think she really wants the science yet, and more the eating plan.

Can someone suggest a good basic how to eat a keto diet primer in video form? I will also include some science links, but something to get her started I’m not sure what to pass on.

I was thinking maybe Butter Bob’s Butter Makes your pants fall of video too. Just rewatched. It’s ok, but still not a basic list of what to eat and what not to eat.

I’m eager to see the responses you get, but I’ll stay quiet as I have not yet had success with any of the books/articles/videos that I recommended in situations like yours. (Even Butter Bob failed me, so I think your instincts for something more general are on target.)

My go-to recommendation is always the first episode of the 2 Keto Dudes podcast. It’s entertaining and informative in a way that doesn’t overwhelm when first considering whether Keto is right for you. There’s also some great posts in the Newbies and Tips from the Oldies sections here on the Forums that might assist.

Well, I sent her a few things. Including this which looked pretty simple: https://www.tasteaholics.com/keto-diet/low-carb-food-list-what-you-can-eat-drink-on-keto/

I take it as a success that she asked about it. She is a registered nurse, so probably lots of “common sense” stuff she will have to break away from.

But, still love more advice on what to provide without overwhelming.

I found keto/LCHF via the Documentary My Big Fat Diet about the Canadian experiment in a fishing community it features Dr Jay Wortman. It was really moving (&motivating) to see people making a change. I then found out about Dr Eric Westman and watched his video on YouTube

His hand-out with the famous Page 4 is avaialble here; http://summit2016.lipedemaproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/No-Sugar-No-Starch-Diet-Clinic-Handout-134067.pdf

I hope that these links work, this is my first time posting here!

Here are some of my thoughts on what to recommend to someone who might be interested but has no knowledge:

  1. Podcast 1 (2 Keto Dudes)
  2. Podcast 20 - the Big Fat Surprise
  3. Podcast 26 - Obesity Code with Dr. Fung
  4. Podcast 27 - Mad as Hell
  5. Dr. Phinney’s lecture at Epworth Hospital November 13, 2016
  6. other 2 Keto Dudes podcasts in sequence, especially #2, #3, #16

The very first thing I read when I found LCHF was www.dietdoctor.com - they have a super-easy 2 week get’cha started plan. It was so helpful and easy to follow. I always suggest this website and 2ketodudes for newbies!

Reddit’s has problems but it is the best I have come across.

Great Overview
The FAQ

I give these and a link to the dudes to everyone who asks.

I normally work in what I do, how it’s worked for me… along with sending them this link https://www.ruled.me/guide-keto-diet/

it’s basic… I figure if they still want to know more I can send them more, talk to the more…

I’m not the rule, I’m the exception when it comes to scouring the internet to find all the info I can, as many people who listen to podcasts there are so many that do not even know they are a thing… so i try and keep it as simple and low tech as that person needs…

oh, so you know my coworkers? :smirk: Yet again I listened to a very smart woman tell me how her dietician wants her to stay around 1400 calories. And that’s worked well for you before?

Next time we work together I am leaving a copy of “The Obesity Code” at the nurses station. I am almost done with it and have to admit I hear Dr Fung’s voice when reading. Keeps it entertaining.

Thanks for posting this! The video and pdf are great resources for anyone starting out.

Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt’s diet doctor site is pretty good for listing which foods to eat …very simply for beginners to understand

This one is difficult, I did a lot of research to get where I am. The high fat is very difficult for people and doing it half way is very distructive. I took me a good 2 months to go all in. The information you are pointing to is good but I think a disclaimer is called for.

Try to understand the science first then dive in!

I also recommend www.dietdoctor.com, especially the two-week trial and eating plan. Lots of great friendly resources there, including excellent videos.

What about these, from Carl and Richard?

and of course

Three words: bacon and eggs

I found Martina Slajarova’s ketodietapp.com/blog very helpful. She provides info, meal plans, the keto guidelines, recipes and a calculator to figure out the macros. All reading though not video. I have also found her recipes amazing. Cooking good food while learning a new lifestyle is so comforting. Kudos to your friend and to you for helping out.

We need some “Butter and Eggman” around here

(Cathrine Helle) #19

Doesn’t he have a video where he goes grocery shopping? That could be useful for someone starting out

I hope you charge her to do the work for her, i hate it when people are that lazy.
If she doesn’t appreciate it and returns the favor somehow tell her she is chubby.
