"I’ve been STRICT with my keto, BUT…”

We see this sentiment all the time here. It goes like this.

Him; “I’ve been strict keto, and <some condition that suggests they haven’t been low-carb>
Me; “What have you been eating?"
Him; “You know, lowcarb! etc”
Me; “can you expand on ’etc?’”
Him: “You know, <exasperated> LOWCARB"

Wherein others jump in with their favorite “hacks,” despite our not having established where the fault actually lies.

This reminds me of a well-meaning friend who wanted to offer “low-carb” options at a conference; “Like, perhaps, fruit!”

<le big, deep, breathy sigh>

Filed under the category of “public confusion,” It turns out two celebrities (I think they are, I don’t follow such things) have gone public as going “low-carb” and, as you can see, haven’t:

Here are the highlighted menu items:

As you can see, our famous friends are not as “strict” as they fancy they are.

It’s a fair tact to press the point, here; “detail how you’ve been strict.” Don’t take for granted the poster understands what eating low-carb means.

Hell, after almost 2 years, I’m still figuring it out.

When you ask for more details, but only get more vague answers.

What a dreadful plate of food.

Great Seinfeld clip though!

Oh, this exactly.
One of my friends wanted to go keto and said she would follow exactly what I said.
I explained why carbs needed to be kept low and there would likely be a few crappy days before it got better.

Check in a week later and she’s doing the keto except keeping the carbs because she “can’t survive without them.” Needless to say, she gave up after that. You can lead a horse to water…

Yea, that, and somewhere, somehow, I’ll read the “I’m allowed to cheat, right?” post.

Big sigh.

There is a “How am I doing after two days” or something thread active, and I just posted my beginners guide to it, and got “thanks, but I just want to know if I’m going OK” as a response. Well, I just gave you some very basic tools so you can work that out for yourself…

In desperate times, just cut to the chase. That reminds me of an old movie,

You know that thread I started with the totally ridiculous and absurdly exaggerated questions? The one where people I’d never heard of thought I was mocking them personally? Well, that’s the sort of thing I thought was simply too absurd to be real. Now I get why people thought I was mocking them—apparently I actually was!

I think that people with health issues would be more likely to take keto more seriously then people who are not morbidly obese who simply see keto as a road to weight loss.

Too bad JLo and A-Rod can’t afford a chef who can cook meat, or at least a really tasty fish dish.

And I have to say it: What’s with Americans and green beans? Why can’t they live without green beans? I mean, I like green beans, but come on. . . .

A lady I know was telling everyone she was eating “Zero Carb”. I was intrigued because I love Keto, but since I also try to keep a fair amount of vegetable in my diet—it’s a balance and has to be carefully monitored to hit the macros and keep my net carbs in check. I was genuinely curious as to what she was eating.

She invited me over to her house for something, and while we were there she poured herself a water-glass full of skim milk and then drank it. I asked her if her zero carb diet was over, and she was all, “Of course not!” I turned the carton around and pointed out that since she’d just drank effectively two cups of milk, that was 24 carbs AND 24 grams of sugar. She was flabbergasted that milk had carbs. While there, I pointed out several other things she was eating that were pretty carb-rich and she had no idea. (lots of worchestershire sauce, and peanut butter). Turns out she’d done zero research because she believed carbs were bread, pasta, rice, PERIOD. I recommended this website and a couple of others.

She’s stopped consuming skim milk, worchestershire and peanut butter but still eats huge quantities of other carbs while telling everyone she’s “zero carb”. I don’t intervene or offer information anymore because I don’t have enough time in my life to verbally tell someone all the information on the internet.

People are strange sometimes.

I have a friend who is doing “keto” and she posts pics on social media of the bowl full of fruit covered in premade in the can whipped cream all over it, and drinks OJ, and really falls off the wagon weekly then wonders why she can’t lose weight??? Shake my head…

I assume nobody knows what they’re doing until they list what they eat. You can tell if they’re giving deets about their macros or blood glucose levels that they know something but it’s never a bad idea to ask exactly what they’re eating, drinking, condimenting, shaking, squirting and mixing into and onto their food. I think folks think condiments are free bees sometimes. And another member learned that their daily multi had 8 g carbs in it.

@PetaMarie so true, and you can assume that foods or condiments have little to no carbs but you have to check everything! My mom invited us to eat at Olive garden for dinner and I was shocked at some of the good old favorites infused to get! I read labels on everything now!

Sigh. So frequently common.

My go-to is Dr. Westman’s HEAL Clinics since I’ve found his advice to be most effective against bad information and my own confirmation bias.

Countering people’s concepts on, well, anything, is dangerous territory.

My goal for strangeness is 100%. How’m I doin?

I love strange people; they are my favorite type! This lady is actually a good friend of mine, that’s another reason I don’t correct her carb misconception again and again. I explained to her that one day about how there’s carbs in so many things, including vegetables, but I’m not going to be that person she starts to hate because I keep harping on it, over and over.

I’m going to go check out HEAL Clinic, thanks.

VERY well.
