I never would have had this reaction a year ago

Tomorrow is our annual fundraiser gala at work. I just got this email from a colleague since we are going all hands on deck with set up today and tomorrow morning.

To keep everyone happy and energized, we have a mountain of bagels and some fresh fruit in the education conference room. Stop by and fuel up while they last!

A year ago my reaction would have been glee (um free food y’all!) but today it made me feel sad. I know that sugar and carb spike will leave those folks slumped, not energized.

That is a neat switch, good for you that you recognize that.

I am literally saddened on a weekly basis at the foods available at my workplace–one where fitness and health are crucial to the job. Our ‘snack closet’ is atrocious and sugar-laden. There is even a meme posted on the price list about getting fat from the snacks :woman_shrugging::rage::worried::face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Before I knew I didn’t know. I know that doughnuts aren’t a good food choice but bagels used to sound healthy to me back then. Problem is that keto friendly foods are not easy to get for a conference room “stop by and get some” meal. I can’t tell you how many times vendors visit my office and bring doughnuts, biscuits or bagels for “the guys”. Well they enjoy them and I just skip’em.

Just be proud of yourself in your own personal progress on Keto since last year and think of what a good Keto model you will be for this fund raiser. You never know who will notice your progress and ask about Keto =))!

Energized… I’m sure carbs do that for many, we aren’t all the same and keto isn’t for everyone. Still, lots of sugary fruit and bagels don’t seem ideal even for most people who thrive on a high-carb diet. If I was the organizer, I surely would add lovely cheese cubes and vegetables, they are pretty and easy to eat too… Still not good for everyone but it’s hard to cater to each and every person. I just couldn’t stand the idea to provide only food that mostly contains the single non-essential macronutrient, it’s so wrong. Even my fruit and grain lover high-carber SO wouldn’t eat anything in such a room! We both need proper meals.
But it surely makes some people happy. Maybe not energetic or healthy but many people don’t seem to mind that. Too bad it makes some people’s life harder but we should handle such temptations if we want results.

Free food? Unless one is starving, it shouldn’t be that tempting when it’s just bagels and fruits and if we are quite sure they aren’t good for us. I very rarely want to harm myself even if I get paid for it… It’s like throwing out expensive stuff that is bad for us. Yes, we lost the money but do we want to get damaged too?

For me, I find the compelling thing is food that is both (1) free and (2) “right there”. I might not drive or walk across town for free food, and I might not be excited about close-by food that I had to pay retail price for.

But put (1) and (2) together and it’s a very compelling proposition. Especially when you know that there’s plenty and it will be thrown out of you don’t take it.

That’s my take on the psychology of it anyway.

I always hated food put out at work or someone bringing in homemade cakes or whatever crap. I just wanted to work day to go fast and be done so I could get out of work fast as I can LOL Never enjoyed the little snacky party things everyone tried to make at work. Never interested me. Work was work, my real life was outside those doors where I could find my own food  So glad you didn’t touch any of that junk. And junk it is

Quite so. I ran into a person last night at a high school play that I have not seen in about 6 months and she commented on my changed appearance. She asked how I accomplished it. So we had a nice chat. However, I find I tell people I have cut carbs and sugar. I don’t say “keto.” That always seems to change the tone of a conversation.

Hopefully tonight’s fundraiser gala goes well. We will see if anyone notices a difference. (I also think my feet will ache less after being in heels for hours!)

Welcome to my life. I’m currently working in a french bakery where we sell things like bacon and swiss baguettes, german pretzels and ham and cheese brioche waffles. Some days are really hard. In the middle of a 4 day fast right now and heading into work.

Wow, that’s freaking impressive. I’m always impressed by my wife when she’s fasting, as she has to make our kids’ lunches 3 times a day. But what you’re doing is well beyond that.

wow I couldn’t do that. you are strong Shallimar! great for you.

I’ve had to bring pastries to work before and really dislike doing that. I always pick up kolaches or whatever meat-filled pastries they have in addition to the sugar poison and just eat the insides and toss the pastry.

If I know I will be in an all-day meeting with doughnuts and fruit I’ll eat some bacon and eggs for breakfast.

Hope you had a successful fund raiser!

I used to eat all of that stuff, and when the sugar crash sets in you eat more it. I went to a grand opening recently and all there was to eat there was cookies, cupcakes, and wine. I avoided all if it and left early to get some real food, lol.

It amazes me how people eat so much sugar and it is just socially accepted but you say no thanks and they look at you weird. Or better yet tell you how all of that low carb stuff will kill you, lol.

That’s such a good move! If I’m going somewhere in the evening where I know they’ll be serving a buffet of ‘beige’ (sausage rolls, crisps, pastry) I make sure I eat a meal shortly beforehand, and then entertain myself at the end of the room with the bar rather than the end with the buffet!

I guess there isn’t a bar option in daytime work scenarios though!
