I need some help with these foods

(Andrew Nathaniel) #1

Hello i’m a newbie here and i do need some help with the foods i’m currently having.

So i recently got a food delivered from my parent (some beef and pork jerky, orange and pork floss) so i tasted most of them are sweet, i’m afraid that i will lose my current progress on Ketosis and have to reset. Even though i had to reset, what should i do with the food? (it’s not good to waste the foods and most of my friends didn’t eat pork…)

And other thing, i don’t know what state am i in, i already done intermittent fasting (because i’m so broke and my wallet force me to fast) and water fasting, but i don’t see any progress happening to my body (yet). Should i go more “extreme” than before so i can get to see the progress faster?

Thanks in advance

Do they have any packaging? With an ingredients list?

If not and they taste sweet, then I would give them away or bin them. No-one wants to waste food, but if you eat them and they contain sugars then they will set you back.

How long have you been doing keto?
What kinds of things to you eat?
What is your height/weight etc?

Is it packaged or homemade? No nutritional labels to check? If you don’t hate the taste and the carbs in them can fit in your macros you could probably eat it fine. Commercial jerky has sugar in it too and seems to be thought of as keto friendly.

If packaged you could donate it to your local food pantry. If not can you take it into work and leave it in the kitchen with a ‘help yourself’ sign?

Intermittent Fasting for many of us doesn’t drop pounds unless you’re also in a calorie deficit. One of the ways it work is, it’s just hard to eat a whole day of calories in one sitting, so you naturally eat less. Try myfitnesspal to get the maths in order, check you’re not having too many carbs, and get calibrated - foods are often shockingly higher calorie than you think - when you have a handle on how much food is too much, you won’t need to rely in it and can eyeball your intake.

Personally, with my low metabolic rate I just water fast to cut and do keto to maintain or gain muscle. In theory - sticking with gym program would help

No. Never.

EVERY jerky I have looked at has way too many carbs for me. This really shocked me because I thought it was just meat…oh no. Always check the packet on jerky and biltong.

If that means “what do you mean”. Have you never read the labels?. E.g. Krave has sugar in all it’s varieties. Also check out jerky homemade recipes - they usually tell you to marinate the meat in sugar or maple syrup.

I read labels all the time because I’m allergic to all pulses and gluten intolerant - and when I don’t, I end up with reactions because those things crop up in places you’d not always expect - like jerky, chocolate, cheese, sausage, soup. Also, I’ve had nasty reactions to foods that were clear, and they changed the recipe, so, for me I avoid a lot of pain by making label reading a habit.

I love jerky but as well as sugar they usually also have soy that I’m horribly allergic to - not just the teriyaki but from soy lecithin, which is a ubiquitous emulsifier. I might experiment with making my own sans sugar sometime.

I’ve not found a single Jerry that does not have carbs. Go pemmican or go home!

Ughh… Spell check. Jerky.

Freeze it and think about later

I’ve done keto for about 2 weeks or so, but i think i did it wrong for the first week. I eat sardines, egg, instant noodles (this is the wrong part i think, but i do watch the carb etc). I don’t have any kitchen in my boarding house so the only thing i can make by myself are those 3 (by heating them through a water heater). I haven’t calculate my weight since 1 months ago which is around 85 kgs and my height is 168 m (standard asian).

I’m sure it’s packaged, when i ask my mom to photo the nutrition labels she didn’t get the message so all i can assume from my taste bud is they do have some either soy sauce/honey/brown sugar in it. I do check some commercial jerky label and they do have some sugar (8 grams) and i assume they do have around that.

I don’t know if i’m on a calorie deficit yet, i counted around 600 kilo calories (maximum) on a single day and i also do exercise which will burn around 300 calories. I notice that i drink a lot more than i used to, so is it a good sign?

Also the reason i do eat a bit more is i’m currently on my mid term exam week and i don’t want to go blank in the middle of a test just because i don’t eat well.

Maybe i will double my exercise? will it do good enough though?

I didn’t expect to get a lot of responses, i thank you guys from the depth of my heart.

So FYI, my background is not from around USA, i’m from around South East Asian and as you might already know we heavily dependent on rice here.

This is very, very low, and may cause your body to hold onto weight.

Stress can also make your body hold on to weight.

This way of eating is great and I think you should give it an honest try. But changing eating patterns is it’s own stress on your body. You may want to consider waiting till after midterms to start so that the hardest weeks of keto aren’t at the same time as the hardest weeks of school. I also wouldn’t increase exercise until you are used to eating keto for a few weeks. This is not a quick fix, but it is a healthy long term plan.

Regarding the jerky, eat it until you are ready to start keto for sure. Then, if you aren’t sure it is low carb, one nice thing about jerky is that it doesn’t go bad quickly. If you like the flavor and it doesn’t make you crave eating sweet things, eat a small piece every now and again.

Best wishes on your journey!

Hmm this is interesting…

I thought i ate too much calories, more than what i actually spend on since class makes me sit on a chair for quite a time. That’s the reason i’m so afraid of eating much. I even started to feel full half way my usual portion of food, maybe because the extreme change i made to my eating pattern.

Well you do make a point here. Maybe i will start the keto diet after mid term and focus on either fasting or exercise more, the reason is i do have some free time where i don’t have any tests.

I also wanted to try a keto catering service since i don’t really have a kitchen and it’s probably a lot safer than eating outside. Hopefully they don’t mess things up

I know a carb-free Jerry.

:joy:

I’m questioning the idea that sugary jerky is thought of as “keto-friendly.”

(Running from stupidity) #18

*Almost certainly will

I see. By 'seems", I mean I’ve seen jerky in this forum listed among keto friendly snack options.
I don’t think that’s unfair, though, it depends on each person… For a ‘if it fits your macros’ believer, the carbs in that Krave I linked come to 11g - same a Tikka Masala sauce dinner - for someone limiting to 50-100g a day that’s easily included in daily macros.
For 20 it’s getting tight but doable.
Apart from my allergies, my 5% is only 12.5g - I can afford it. I’d rather save them for things like milk in my tea (5.75g for 1/2 cup already) and some lettuce and garlic.
