I learned something today! :D

So I’m in my 4th week of keto and I’m ecstatic that I’m getting this thing figured out. At lunch today I ate wayyyy too much protein and I felt extremely tired afterwards (assuming insulin spike) and a sense of satiety never kicked in. I felt really gross/crummy afterwards. For dinner I had a small cup of heavy whipping cream and pumpkin and immediately felt satiation, no feeling of tiredness and a ton of energy. Life is good!

I forgot to pack my lunch at work last week but someone had left us cocktail peanuts and there was some cream cheese. I eat limited cheese and never eat peanuts but I did (one small handful) and two hours later I felt like I had been hit with a truck. I almost cried I felt so tired and moody. I attribute it to an insulin spike because I eat a lot of protein and fat, but not many carbs. More protein than recommended and THAT makes me feel better and full. I like to hear stories like yours and it’s cool that we’re all different but figuring it out. Good for you for paying close attention.

That’s interesting. When everyone is so different, it makes figuring things out harder. However I’m happy with my baby steps! Thanks for sharing.

Welcome to the forum Kristen.

Since I’ve started Keto, I’ve learned so much about myself and so much about food and the human body in general. All of this helps us on our journey to living life happy and healthy. I’m pleased to hear you are enjoying the ride.

Welcome! It’s always nice to learn new things, especially about your body.

I learned a couple weeks ago that even the smallest amount of candy is a bad idea for me. Daughter had Halloween candy obviously. Had just a fun size kit kat (so 2 of the little wafer bars versus 4). Felt fine at first as I hadn’t really had any carbs that day and was eating lots of good fat. Then a few hours later, I was hanging up clothes in my closet and I felt completely out of it and woozy. I fell backwards and luckily my bedroom door kept me from falling to the ground. I had almost passed out. And after I thought about it, that kit kat probably made my blood sugar spike since I haven’t been eating sugar since Keto, and then it dropped and my body didn’t know what to do. Lesson learned. Not even the smallest bit of candy for me!

On Thanksgiving day this year, some friends wanted to go out to eat with us for lunch. So we went. Basically, I ate at the salad bar. Most of the stuff that I ate was actually pretty keto friendly as I left the potato salad and other high carb stuff alone. I did eat a couple of plates worth and overate in quantity. (It wasn’t all that satisfying and definitely lacked meaningful protein.) Not long after eating, I felt like I had eaten a rock. No, I wasn’t sick, but it’s definitely not a feeling I’ve had in quite a while. I didn’t like it and don’t plan to repeat it anytime soon.

Just sharing…

Wow that story is a good deterrent from eating any candy in the future lol!

Actually, you might have a lack of glucagon response. In other words, insulin goes up due to protein, and glucagon goes up to counteract that. If glucagon does not go up, you have too much insulin, leading to a drop in blood sugar and hypoglycemia. Jimmy Moore gets this with higher protein intake. (Although he also gets worse hypoglycemia with very high fat intake…he needs to eat fat and protein within a range.)

I, on the other hand, can keep eating fat until I’m sick and do not get satiated. Protein for me is satiating. But I’ve also tested my blood sugar with massive amounts of protein, and get no increase or decrease in blood sugar, which means both insulin and glucagon are “working” for me (not as well as they once did…but better than other people’s).

Agreed, there really is no baseline it seems…keep plugging away, you are doing GREAT
