I hit my target weight! Went off keto. Feel terrible!

#1

Hello! So big update – I’ve gone from 211 to 179 (I’m 6’2) and my target weight was 180. I feel good. Been pairing keto with OMAD (4-hour eating window). I’ve been on keto since… Nov 26 with very few allowances.

Last night the wife and I did a Chipotle run (normally I get this great keto salad) but I had the great idea of getting my pre-Keto order with rice, beans, and chips to boot.

Today I don’t feel good at all. Brain fog, system is thrown totally out of whack, my fast isn’t going as well.

This was a bad idea.

Should I jump right back into keto again? Anyone else done this before? I’m thinking I need to just get back on the horse, because from what I’ve reading I probably totally crushed my progress to boot, which is a little demoralizing.

Advice?

I went off keto once and regained all the weight. It isn’t a diet, it’s a permanent change.

Cheating isn’t worth it, for exactly that reason. The shitty feeling is normal.

Oh yes get back on the wagon asap! It takes about 3 days or so to get that “feeling” back. #kcko

I am keto for life. When I reach my ideal weight (only four pounds left) is irrelevant. This is so easy and has so many health benefits. KCKO

And yes, just jump back in with a lesson learned.

Yes, get back to it. I’m pretty strict keto (minus the artificial sweeteners) so my plan is to get really loose with this way of eating and see what my body does once I reach my goal weight. It is never to go back to SAD or eat junk and see what happens. I already know how that story ends.

Consider, if you want to expand your choices going in for the keto style breads/dough/tortillas next time you want something like that.

Yes, get right back on the horse. I think people who really feel the toll carbs take on their bodies are actually lucky. You won’t be as keen next time.

I don’t know where you read the single off plan meal would crush your progress but that is absolutely not true. This is all that will happen. Your liver and muscles will have been able to store some glycogen and this will cause an increase in water weight. This can be 4-5 pounds even.

Don’t sweat it. If you get back to keto that water weight will just slide back off over the next 6 days or so. You won’t have put on any real fat to speak of. It just isn’t that fast unless you have a binge eating problem.

As for the brain fog, I get it bad also when I have carbs. For me it’s gone the next day and my wonderful keto high is back the day after that.

I think if we are fat-adapted for a while and then have a heavy carb meal, our body is probably going to struggle to process it efficiently. It’s like going from diesel to unleaded and now back to diesel. Your engine (brain) isn’t used to it and is struggling to find the amount of energy it is accustomed to having. Maybe next time you can try a small amount of beans or rice or chips?

It’s not the end of the world. You probably gained some water weight since your body was likely to refill glycogen reserves in your muscles and liver. It’s not like you gained a bunch of fat from just one meal of high carbs. If I were you, I would eat high fat for a few days to correct the energy imbalance your body is going through… then maybe boost total carbs to 30 for a week, then maybe 40 and see how your body reacts. I don’t see anything wrong with adding very moderate amounts of starch into your diet if you enjoy things like rice and beans (like I do).

Keto isn’t a diet, it’s a life choice for health and longevity. I see carbs like alcohol… it won’t kill you but it’s not exactly a healthy choice.

Good news is that getting fat adapted kicks your body hormonally to recover quickly. Basically, it’s like riding a bike… your body wants to be keto again and it knows how to get there now… 96 hours and you should be back. Just keep water and electrolytes (salts) going.

As Carl said, “not the end of the world”, but I reckon you should get back into keto straight away.

I accidently got knocked out by hidden carbs, it’s more fun when you’re losing weight and know you are not getting poisoned by processed sugar, wheat, rice, soy, corn … carb / insulin overdose leads to metabolic syndrome for most people. You probably won’t drop dead on the spot but get out of there ASAP.

Cheers (well done on weight loss etcetera).

Congrats on your weight loss and being human!!! We all are going to make mistakes. We have to remember what made us unhealthy and gained all that weight in the 1st place.
I personally have no ability to eat carbs like rice or chips in moderation so I doubt I will eat those again. I have had 1 bite of birthday cake or 1 bite of bread in past 3 months since i have started my KWOL but will not start ordering those items for me to eat a whole serving. It is far to risky for me.
I think you fell into the trap of thinking i am at my goal weight! I will reward myself with food! Try to find other things as a reward like smaller clothes, a personal trainer, or a mini vacation to celebrate!
