I have the flu... the "real" flu

(CJ) #1

Okay, I have been keto since the end of October and it has been going well. You guys have been through everything so I come to you for some of your “been there, done that” knowledge.

I have a temp and I am throwing up (graphic, sorry) like I am possessed… Before keto, I would have some saltines and ginger ale. Those aren’t my best option now so what have others done to settle their stomachs?

Thank you for your help.

I advise lots of warm, salted bone broth. You can microwave mugfulls at a time and this will help you stay hydrated and get you some electrolytes. Eat if you can because your immune system still needs energy but I imagine if you are fat adapted that it’s not as important since your body fat can keep everything running smoothly.

Get plenty of rest… like 10-12 hours per day if possible. Healing works best when our energy is focused.

Hang in there and feel better soon CJ.

If you have fresh ginger, you can boil about an inch worth, sliced, strain and drink the fluid. You can also add some cloves of garlic if you like garlic. That can help with the bugs (raw is better, but not everyone can do that, especially if you are barfing. If I do raw garlic, I mince it and swallow with water because chewing it is too much for me).

You could also chew on some fresh ginger without ingesting the fiber, just to get the juice in you. But that’s often too strong for most people to handle. There are also ginger capsules, but since you’re barfing, that’s not a great idea.

Go high carb and take elderberry syrup:

Reduces effects of the flu much, much better than tamiflu.

I think it’s The carbonation that settles your stomach. Maybe try club soda or a diet ginger ale if you’re craving the old comfort solution to your ills. I had a bad stomach ache three nights ago. I drank a 1/2 t of baking soda in a small glass of water and it caused a huge amount of gas to burp out. Very fast relief. @kandescent suggested ginger tea and I second that.

Thank you for the elderberry reminder.

But I thought the magic of keto was supposed to prevent this?

I get many fewer illnesses, but I’m just getting over a cold, low carb/keto 5 years as of 1/1/19.

My wife recommends the following (which I did not do): If you feel anything coming on, gargle with hydrogen peroxide/water; put hydrogen peroxide in ears. Do several times a day if possible. Take elderberry. If sore throat, use the hydrogen peroxide/water and also cayenne pepper (soothing after a hammer hit to the throat). Wash hands as soon as you enter the house.

Using these techniques, we’ve kept a remarkably low number of illnesses the last few years, and she is at the school (a germ-fest), and we have a 2nd grader. and 6th grader.

I had some gastric bug last month, and when I started eating again I was super weak but determined to maintain low carb. My family convinced me out of it; saltines and a bit of low sugar Gatorade and some tea with sugar in it did the trick.

Having said that, I’m insulin resistant but not diabetic, so going high carb for a day doesn’t affect me all that much, particularly because I’ve been fat-adapted for 2.5 years and so my system is metabolically flexible. YMMV!

Yup, I did the exact same. I had a stomach bug a few weeks ago and after 36 hrs of eating nothing I felt I needed some calories and nothing was appealing except the thought of some ginger ale. So my husband went out and got me some diet ginger ale and brought home a big box of saltine crackers, which I hadn’t asked for, because he too felt I needed to eat something.

Anyhow, over the next two days I drank at least six pops and ate two full sleaves of crackers and I still came out the other side four pounds lighter and in ketosis.

I think given how little one eats during a stomach bug, it matters a lot less what you’re eating. I mean, most people who AREN’T keto still lose weight during stomach illnesses.

Edit: I’ll also add the same caveat as Gabe.

Thanks everyone. I’m currently feeling much better. I tried the broth and chewing on some ginger but let’s just say that my stomach did not approve. I ended up doing soda crackers, flat fresca (because I didn’t have ginger ale) and elderberry. Now to see if I can maintain the 4lb. loss!

Keto does not prevent the flu which is from a virus. Ketones reduce systemic inflammation which helps your immune system fight real infections better but it does not prevent these sorts of sicknesses. Just makes it less likely or less severe.

Personally, I don’t see an issue with someone drinking some GingerAle when they are not feeling well. … My Wife and I are actually just now trying to get over something that she picked up, while she was coming over to visit me in the Hospital the week or so before. (Very bad cough, sore throat and stomach cramping)

She too wanted some Ginger Ale to help with a very sore throat and upset stomach she developed, and I told her it wasn’t going to hurt to have some, even if for only a day or so. (I drank a glass with her as well, but didn’t even want any the next day?) - And she has done this twice now I believe? Only when she wasn’t feeling well. And neither time, did it bother her as far as weight loss, or cause any other issues. … I think we sometimes get a little too caught up on making sure not to touch certain things, such as soda. But then again, we also need to keep in mind that we know GingerAle does indeed help with some issues, especially stomach issues.

Some might not agree with me on this, but just my thoughts on it. - Either way, I hope you feel better.

I caught the flu a few weeks back and elderberry saved me! I was so sick and within a day I was feeling much better

Dave

Thanks makes sense to me. I’ve not been sick yet but I have had the flu full on before keto and I would do whatever is needed to make me feel better.

I’m recovering from pneumonia and a massive asthma attack triggered by it. I definitely was getting nowhere in my recovery until I ate potatoes (hash browns with spam, scrambled eggs and hollandaise) after that meal I turned a corner to the better.

My thinking is I needed potassium, and was too sick to analyze keto-potassium Foods. I jumped right back onto the keto train and still lost 5lbs.

Zevia makes a great ginger ale, which I drank twice while sick. I also took 1/2 teaspoon of honey 3 days in a row to help with my coughing.

Hang in there and hope you’re doing better soon.

We gargle with peroxide when we feel a flu or cold coming on, as well.
