hi everyone, i am a type 2 diabetic and my blood sugars have been soaring lately. 25 average readings. i was going to the loo roughly 5 times a night so i decided to try the keto diet. after 2 days my sugars went down to 12.5 and 5 days on , my blood glucose sugar is 11.5 .will it go down to 6? ive also run out of ideas what to eat, on the first 2 days, i just ate lamd meat cooked in its own fat, on the 3rd day i ate roast fish, then next 2 days, lamb cooked in its fat, then fish.i think i am very lost at the moment.is there ant whatsapp group dedicated to keto for diabetics? i think that would be very useful to be in contact when on the move, or for dumb people like me
I have just started a keto regime, but its all new to me
Obviously your arenāt dumb. Donāt sell yourself short. You knew enough to look into what you need to do, and you came to the right place.
For the right foods to eat, just follow this one rule, and you almost canāt go wrong. Replace your carbs with fat. Yes, you can do that. I did 4 months ago. When I did that I went from avg blood glucose of 200 a day (sorry, Iām not familiar with your measurements, I think 200 would be 11?) at the worst , when I was diagnosed, I was at 594. I think thatās a 33 in your metrics.
So one day I decided I was not getting better using official ASA guidelines for diabetes nutrition. So I went Keto. More than that Iām trying zero carb. Itās not as difficult as I thought it would be. Plus, it gets easier everyday as eating no carbs has released me from feeling hungry. I fasted for three days without even trying. When I started Keto I was 245 pounds. 14 days later, I was 205 pounds. Iāve been hovering around 200 pounds now for the past two months. My problem is I like to eat. So when I cook for the wife it makes me want some too, so I havenāt been doing much fasting. For some reason everyone here like it when I cook. Believe me, Iām no cook. Very few things I. Am do right with foodš.
You will get control of your diabetes. Just stay away from carbs. In my opinion, go for it. Zero carbs. If you donāt think you can do that, then keep your carbs under 20 grams a day. Ween yourself off them, you will feel so much better.
A side effect of Keto is weight loss. But if you want to lose weight, then what you want to do is intermittent fasting (IF). Not as ominous as it sounds. Itās really just having all your meals and snacks in a window timeframe of day, four hours, or six hours. Eating nothing outside that window which is your intermittent fast. So a six hour eating window would be a 18/6 fast.
The reason for the eating in that manner to lose weight is to keep your insulin levels as low as possible for as long as possible, as insulin will block your fat stores from being used. Insulin itself lasts but a few minutes. But once the hormone is released, it blocks fat oxidation for a couple of hours. Have you ever heard of eating 5 smaller meals a day to lose weight? It doesnāt work, unless you can also exercise your ass off. The constant presence of insulin will prevent it. The 40 pounds I lost was done while sleeping, and playing World of Warcraft all day.
Keto Connect just put out a series for those beginning their journey. Iām 10 months on keto, so I didnāt watch. But I watch most of their videos, and thereās tons of good info.
They also have a lot of great recipes to give you ideas for things to eat.
thank you very much for your reply.i actually stumbled onto this site by accident about an hour ago, so i dont know my way round yet(plus its 1.30am in the morning).yes i read up on the withdrawal symptoms today. i came across keto about 6 months ago, a lady from the us who posts videos on you tube, roughly 49 years, whose videos appealed to me, then i just went into limp mode.but a few days ago i had enough.i decided to stop carbs all in one. i think i might be close to type 1 diabetes because my doctor doubled my dose but the sugars in my blood stayed same.here in england, the doctors are useless, and they dont tell us the reality, and the best method. so i decided to quit my medication without my doctor because i know that glicazide can cause a problem if there isnt enough carb in my diet. its been 4 or 5 days now, and i am lost for ideas to eat. plus its still in my brain that fat is bad.i cooked lamb in its own fat , but just ate the meat (and tiny amounts of fat), i read about the rabbit starvation diet today, but i with still find it hard to adjust. i can eat 95%protein to 5% fat, maybe push it to 10%, but this western media so called healthy propaganda has brainwashed me throughout my life to eat less fat, eating fat is going to be a big challenge.ps, will this affect my cholestrol?
Wow. Slow down on the protein! Iām pretty sure that can damage your kidneys. Please, I need some backup or correction here. I could be wrong, or (more likely) been severely misinformed by health addicts that are all in on the fat is bad for you myth.
Do you remember your history? Caesar had an aid follow him around everywhere, to constantly remind him, āremember thou art mortalā. I can still see the little guy whispering in Dom Delouises earš.
When I started Keto 4 months ago, I eventually picked up a mantra. āRemember, carbs are poisonā. It eventually stuck. I have no problem at all eating zero carb, high fat. I already have the fear of too much protein ingrained (legit or not, itās there, back of my mind).
So āRemember, fat is healthyā
Oh, I donāt think itās possible for you to be type 1. Type one diabetes is an autoimmune problem. Your own body is attacking itself. Killing off the beta cells thT produce insulin. Type 1 diabetics need to inject with insulin because they produce non of their own.
yes, thank you, i will keep telling myself that fat is good, and try cutting the protein, i know its bad, my urine was very yellow from eating all that protein, but i was so stressed, i didnt know what else to eat .which fats can i eat without too much protein?i dont think i can eat alot of fat from the meat at the moment, i need to get it into my head that fat is good
thanks, you made me smile.i was just thinking, have you ever thought of making a diabetes keto group on whatsapp?if you did, i would definitely like to join
Congrats to you for deciding to make a change, and seeking out the resources to get you started. Well done!
This was exactly my experience in the U.S. as well.
I think many of us struggled with that. After 4.5 years of keto now (Iām 55) I can tell you that I eat a lot of fatty foodsāmeats, cheese, avocados, olive oil, coconut oil, nutsāI have never felt so good. I really enjoy including a good bit of fat in my diet now. It definitely does not make you fat. I havenāt been so lean since high school.
Almost certainly it will affect it in the right ways ā HDL up, Triglycerides down. This is very common. However, it may take a few months so be patient and donāt worry about it. Our doctors tend to focus on the Total Cholesterol number which is practically meaningless.
As I mentioned above: full fat cheeses and cream, low carb nuts can be good sources, avocados, olive oil, coconut oil is really good, full fat yogurt. Iām sure there are other things I am missing.
Best wishes to you. It sounds like you are well on your way to improved health.
thank you for your help, i think im very lucky to have bumped into this site by accident. its very imformative but most important, the people are all ordinary everyday people.who has been on this site the longest?
This is my go to to read when I have nea sayers try to tell me I am screwing up my body by eating like this. I have 80 lbs to lose and have lost 40 lbs in 10 weeks, 40 more to go and I havenāt felt this good in years.
