It’s been a month. I started Keto and intermittent fasting. Have lost 10 lbs. first 2 weeks I felt fine but this past week I feel sick. Before starting glucose levels averages 6.5-6.7. I don’t believe I’m in Ketosis yet as my glucose levels are now around 5.4 -5.8 most of the time (first thing in the morning fast) only 3 times were they 4.3-4.8. I am experiencing diarrhea, nausea, and dizziness. Is this normal? Is this finally the Keto flu? How long to get into ketosis?
I feel ill
I’m in the same boat. Hope someone can offer some advice. I’ve been keto 7 weeks and felt great up until 3 days ago. I’ve never tested anything. Just noticed a things that would indicate I was in ketosis.
Maybe you’re just sick? Measuring BG has no correlation to Ketosis. You need to measure blood ketones for that.
Continuing the discussion from I feel ill:
Not all together true. If your blood glucose is too high you cannot get into ketosis until it lowers.
It certainly could be Keto flu. A lot of people don’t realize Keto flu is simply simptoms of electrolyte imbalances and can happen at any time. It’s most likely to occur in the beginning as your body adapts and you deplete you glycogen levels right away, but any time an electrolyte deficiency happens you can experience the dreaded Keto flu.
An easy way to test it is to suck on some salt, especially when you feel dizzy or nauseous. If it quickly goes away (like in a couple minutes), it’s most definitely an electrolyte issue. If it doesn’t go away, you’ve probably got the flu flu.
I’m not diabetic (hoping others chime in here with more info) but I believe diabetics who start keto see ketosis long before their fasting BG returns to normal levels. As for me, I started with fasting BG in the range of 100-110 mg/dl (5.5-6.1), now consistently much lower, but along the way there wasn’t much of a correlation at all between where my blood glucose was and where my blood ketones were. The relationship could vary quite a bit, which is why I started calculating GKI instead for more insight.
If you are questioning whether you’re in ketosis or not I would personally advise against IF this early in the game. Maybe your body is telling you that’s it’s not ready for that just yet. IF should almost come on itself as you get more fat adapted and your hunger goes down. That was my experience anyway. Ymmv
