Anyone …
I’m new to IF, i’m doing 18 /6 today.
Will i achive autophagy?
And will a bullet proof coffee or a coffee w creamer in it throw me out of that autophagy?
Im pretty new, sorry…been searching for the answer, but can’t see it addressed exactly!

Hi,
The word is Autophagy.
It is where the body goes into tidy up mode and clears up damaged cells and other useful jobs.
It can’t take place whilst you are also digesting things. Think of it like a switch.
So, yes cream (or anything with calories from carbs, fat or protein) will stop autophagy.

Why didn’t you ask this on the other thread…

The simple answer is probably not…

Its quite likely that you won’t achieve the benefits of autophagy by intermittent fasting. However here are other benefits that you may achieve.

If you have BPC or coffee with “creamer” its highly unlikely you will achieve autophagy.

The minor problem is that currently no-one knows how to measure autophagy so there’s no way of telling but… if you just have water then its far more likely that you’ll get into an autophagous state after a while. Maybe 2 maybe 3 days… to be more sure (without ever being able to be sure).

re, threads…
I wonder if a disscussion thread is long, if people will see a new issue?
Or does a comment on an old thread show up in the latest page?

My guess probably not.
If u do IF (for example 16/8) just stick to black coffee or tea.
If u do longer fasts (then it would be for fat loss) u can use it as a little help to stop u from quitting altogether.
The rule is that drinks under 50 kcal might not stop the process but we are all different, you have to test all this on you.

I used bone broth and BP coffee ( but mine is 1 tbsp of coconut oil and 2 tbsps of butter, no need to put half of your daily allowance in one drink, unless that’s your continus effort) while fasting 48 h since l felt tired. My purpose was autophagy, not weigh loss.

Agreed that in the 2nd or 3rd day - especially coming from a keto state - we should be getting into autophagy. It can be measured, at least by having tissue samples taken and autophagosomes counted by a savvy person with a microscope, but it’s expensive and not something most people would do.

The question comes up frequently with regard to intermittent fasting. Nutrient sensors, very importantly - mTOR for one (mTOR has to be deactivated, to an extent) - regulate autophagy, and it’s after the stomach and small intestine are emptied (enough - as the small intestine usually retains a little stuff for a long time) and once glycogen is sufficiently depleted for insulin to be declining and glucagon to be increasing - this is when autophagy gets underway. Dr. Fung describes it as stomach emptying, small intesting emptying, then a ‘post-absorptive phase’ ending (I take it that this includes gloycogen depletion) and then autophagy should be starting.

It’s sad how little is known, and that we only have a paltry few studies, mostly on mice. I think that a case can be made for some autophagy at the end of the first day of fasting - keto should have glycogen relatively depleted from the get-go. How much is a good question, as it is for subsequent days of fasting. It’s still increasing in a mouse after 48 hours of fasting, and the mouse is halfway or more to starving to death at that time.

Yep, starting position makes a huge difference, agreed.
