I dont think I will be able to enter this on Cronometer…

On a vacation to see five operas. Keto eating going well but not tonight as we got reservations (finally) at an amazing spot. Menu for Sazon We’ll be doing the tasting menu and it doesn’t seem to be worth the trouble to track this one or worry about any carbs. Plus I am getting a load of walking in the day.

I hope your weather is good, but I doubt it is better than here. Woke up for a 6.5 mile walk before breakfast and the temperature was 61 F, clear skies and light breezes. Santa Fe at its finest with a high today of 75.

Have a great day!

You start off with ice cream and end with chocolate?

#3

Yep. I wondered about that.

(Joey) #4

Mouth-watering menu descriptions. Would have appreciated a collection of food porn pics. Enjoy! :smirk:

Let’s hope if you add the drinks, there are fewer drinks than courses. Otherwise, they’ll be wheeling you out of there in a wheelbarrow.

Sounds very interesting. I always thought that “mole” = chocolate, but I found via a search that’s not true. (Almost every course has “mole”.)

(Joey) #6

Very common association to make. Molé simply refers to sauce.

The association between “molé” and chocolate comes from the popularity of one particular kind of molé in North America that includes, as an ingredient, the same beans from which chocolate is made.

As customers quickly discover, “chocolate molé” doesn’t taste anything like what most folks think of as chocolate … but it sounds enticing enough and fosters sales.

If you are gonna do it…. Do it! Savor every morsel. No regrets. Next day, back on track. No problem. Enjoy!

I always thought Mexican (as in US Mexican) restaurants were the hardest place to eat for keto folk. But we have one that’s really not bad. Sometimes you have to ignore the tortillas they bring, and other times choose to eat or not eat rice or beans. But I’ve been able to keep really keto or close going there. I’d link to it, but what I eat is from the “specialty” menu, which they don’t show.

@SomeGuy I think you’re correct. I’ve only ever seen mole as being a chocolate-type sauce, but I’ll have to pay more attention next time I go to see if that really is the pattern.

Yeah that is the Mole Poblano which most people in the US are more familiar with. It’s not the only Mexican Mole that has chocolate but it’s the one more commonly seen. Usually served on chicken.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #10

Most mole sauces (which is actually redundant, because mole is an Aztec word meaning “sauce”) do contain chocolate, though there are a lot of recipes that don’t. Mole poblano de guajalote, which is the national dish of Mexico, is my favourite, turkey in chocolate-chili mole. The chocolate is unsweetened, which confuses people, but makes for a better flavour (in my opinion).

I have fond memories of a cooking contest hosted by the International Club in high school. The Spanish Club made this dish, with poblano peppers bought from a Mexican bodega down in Bridgeport. We made the mistake of not wearing gloves when we cut up the peppers, so our hands hurt for days, but the dish was really tasty. Our tortillas were a flop, but our main dish won the prize for most unusual dish. I though we should have also won the prize for tastiest dish, as well, but not everyone has my taste for hot spice.

Yep. Pretty much the only safe bet is the largest fajita platter they make (I usually get chicken, steak, and shrimp) and then either ask for no tortillas or don’t even pop open that little round thing they come in…

I enjoyed clicking on the menu and playing the “What-Can-I-Order-That-Is-Keto” from the main menu. That was pretty easy. Tasting menu, not so much. I’d just enjoy it and get back to it tomorrow.

They do have the specials online:

This is what I had last time:

They forgot to bring me the rice and beans, and I didn’t use the tortillas. It was great! And so big I took part home.

This is great too:

They have another one that’s steak and chorizo with multiple sauces. it is served over rice, but not much rice, and has charred jalapenos. Great.

Same here, on day 5 of vaca, I’m entering stuff “good enough”, as long as I have a ballpark, that’s all I’m really gonna get. Grabbed a week gym membership so I’m still doing my lifting every morning and up’d the cardio a bit. I wasn’t stupid enough to think I wouldn’t gain on this thing. Way easier to behave again once I’m in my own kitchen again, plus, I’ll cheat some back off

(Bob M) #15

Ah…dude…it’s VACATION.

Way back when I was a pseudo-body builder, I remember reading an article about a trainer (a famous body builder back then). When he got a new body builder as a client, the first he told them was to take a week off. Completely. They had the hardest time doing that.

#16

Agreed, last year I tried that, gained almost 30lbs in a week, took like 3mo to fix. I’d rather be lazy and sleep in everyday, but my brain will sell me out and if its edible…its GONE!

I’m going to Santa Fe for the Wine & Chile Festival in September. I don’t think I can stay totally keto while there, but I’m pretty confident I can get back on the wagon when I get home. There’s one event I’m going to called “Chile Friday: A Celebration of New Mexico Chile” where not only do you taste a bunch of food, but you get up to 12 samples of Patron Margaritas. Sounds really tasty, but oh the sugar.

#18

Well it was awesome. My nonketo misadventure started earlier in a red Chile cooking class 2-4 where in addition to preparing four different salsas/ sauces (including one with grilled pineapple ) we made our own homemade tortillas. The tasting menu at Sazon was awesome and even larger than and somewhat different than the website. Ended with a very rich dessert. Blood sugar response was… well see for yourself.

(Bob M) #19

That’s the infamous higher surge that you’d get if you ate more carbs a day or so beforehand.

But not terrible, really.

Do you have to take the data for you to get the dots on there?

#20

It takes data frequently in its own but the dots are when I did it myself. Quick check. But it does it like every 10 minutes or so. And you can see this graph anytime on the app with or without dots
