I cheated 😩

#1

So I cheated last Thursday for my sons birthday and when I say cheated, I mean really cheated. I had a burger with the bun, crisps, chocolate and and chocolate cake. I stupidly thought that because I’d gotten into ketosis really quickly when I started that I’d hop right back into Ketosis.

The funny thing is, the next day I thought I’d just KCKO but honestly I wasn’t hungry at all. I went all day without any food at all and wasn’t remotely hungry. The only reason I ate breakfast the next morning was because I’m still nursing my baby.

It’s now Monday and truly, I am still not feeling hunger throughout the days and could honestly last right through to the next day. I’m not losing weight on the scales but I’ve lost another half inch from waist. Part of me is praying that I’m fat adapted but another part thinks I can’t be. I’ve tested my urine ketones and it’s showing trace.

I have a breathalyser and where it normally reads 0.05 BAC it’s now reading 0.00

What is going on?!

I don’t know what is happening with your ketones but what does it matter? You can’t undo what you’ve eaten and it happens. Just continue to eat what you should and go on. Nursing uses a lot of calories so that is in your favor.
Eat dense sources of good quality food. I don’t really recommend fasting for nursing moms. I’m sure occasionally it’s okay like when you’re sick, but I don’t think it’s ideal.
Early on when I was in ketosis, my appetite was gone. That may be what you are experiencing in spite of a cheat. Just do your best to eat healthy Keto options and make sure you are eating enough salt and getting enough magnesium.

Thanks for replying. Yes I’m keeping up with my electrolyte supplements and fortunately I’ve not suffered any loss of milk for my little one and Im about 8 weeks in I think. He’s as chunky as ever  and I really don’t feel depleted health/energy wise.

I guess you’re right, ketones don’t matter. I’m still tracking my macros so I’ll just continue. I’m just more interested in understanding what is happening inside my body, the mechanics of it all.

Xx

Have you followed Amy Berg at all? She is really good. She’s a keto dietician and speaks at conferences, has a blog and recently has a YouTube channel. I think she is a very sane voice in this Keto world. (As are Carl and Carrie and Richard Morris of Keto Dudes)

Do you mean Amy Berger with http://www.tuitnutrition.com/?

(Wendy) #6

Yes sorry. :blush:It’s early here.

No problem. I figured… Have a great day Wendy.

Thanks you too!

I agree with Wendy: it is spilled milk and what is done is done; and when you are nursing, you should not be fasting!

You just had the one day of cheating, and are back on track, so just keep going =). Take care, and I hope that
you will find it easier to resist temptations next time!

No I haven’t heard of her, I’ll check her out. Thank you x

Yeah I really wasn’t intentionally fasting, it just happened as I wasn’t hungry at all.

Thanks for replying

Honestly, don’t worry about it … it doesn’t take your body that long to recover from a setback
My diet is my lifestyle… i used to prep for bodybuilding shows and sometimes I find my body so depleted so id take a fried chicken or a pizza then stop … my body will fill up with at least 5 pounds of water within 6 hours of that cheat meal … so i leave it at that
The next morning i lose about 2lbs of that added water … i go on a calorie defect for that day … i still get all my meals in but i add more veggies and lower my carbs by like 20% … i do the same thing on day 2 … on day 3 , i lost about 5-6 lbs and that extra 1 pound usually turns out to be fat mass

Even when i did keto from (2015-2017) i think i had 1 or 2 birthday surprises lol  but it didn’t stop me from reaching my goal…

So get back on the diet… don’t let stress into your life over a small mistake … get back on keto and forget about it :fist:t2:

You’re fine. One occasional meal is fairly insignificant. It merely temporarily stopped.fat burning, which will resume once the carbs are out of your digestive system. There was no chance of reversal of your positive.adaptations, which would need a chronic carb consumption pattern and the refilling of liver glycogen. One meal of carbs probably won’t even make it out of your digestive tract, and if any do they’ll be converted to muscular glycogen, which will not interfere with Lipolysis.

Thanks for replying.

Thanks everyone. I got back into ketosis again (Yey!) and then lost 3lbs!

But then today I got my period and it seems to have knocked me out of ketosis! Is this even possible? The only thing different in my diet was that for breakfast I had a small serving of chia seeds soaked in almond milk with a strawberry cut on top and a sprinkling of raw cacao powder. I’ve been super strict this week with net carbs between 14-19.

I’m just going to carry on obviously but is it possible that my period kicked me out of maybe the chia seeds?

It’s not so much that your period kicked you out of ketosis (if you are eating a small enough amount of carbohydrate you have to be producing ketones, or you’d keel over), but that your hormones are affecting everything. The onset of your monthly was probably why you haven’t been showing much in the way of ketones all week. Just keep eating (you don’t want to slip into euglycaemic ketoacidosis, which is a risk when lactating moms try to fast), and as long as you stay ketogenic, you’ll be fine.

If it helps, I’ve been yielding to cravings over the last few days. I think I haven’t really exceeded my carb threshold (it’s higher than 20 g/day, I know that much), but I still feel like crap, even though still in ketosis. So why have I been eating extra carbs when I know how bad they are for me, and they make me feel terrible? Simple: I’m a carb and sugar addict. Let’s both try to take better care of ourselves, at least for today. Today is enough to worry about—tomorrow can take care of itself.

Paul, what kind of carbs are you overeating?

(Randy) #18

I think of it this way. You didn’t ā€œcheatā€ because you didn’t get away with anything.

You either eat ketogenically or not.

For 1 day, you did not.

Not the end of the world if you look at the long run. KCKO and all that jazz.

A sugary dessert that my sister bought to serve to a guest, among other things. My weakened resistance to cravings may have had something to do with the strain of trying to recover from a respiratory virus that is circulating in our area (be very careful—people are down for a good four weeks when they catch it).

The good news is that, on keto, even when I yield to a craving, my general lack of hunger seems to prevent the extra carb intake from leading to an outright binge. But it took about a week to get my appetite for carbohydrate back under control. This is why I (try to) stick to the 20 g/day limit, even when my actual carb threshold appears to be much higher than that. I try to bear in mind that I don’t want to do further damage to my body or my metabolism, but it’s not always easy when some food is lying around the kitchen, singing its siren song . . .
