hi all, my hubby and I started 1.5 weeks ago. We are measuibg macros, lots of cooking from scratch, nothing processed, however, we both can barely move and its been like this for a while. I expected keto flu to come and go, not stick around this long. I feel like a ton of bricks and just want to sleep with a chronic mild headache. Is it electolyes? I put salt on everything! My hubby wants to give up because of how bad he feels. Is it a phase? Will it pass?? Can keto flu last 2 weeks? Will I find energy?? Thanks so much!
I cant move off the couch
What are you eating specifically? You clearly removed the carbs, are you getting the fat you need for fuel? What are the macros you’re shooting for?
Yes I think we need more information here, hon. Sorry you two are having such a rough time!
While you might simply be adapting to the diet, fatigue and lethargy can be signs of inadequate protein intake. We recommend protein in the range of 1.0-1.5 g per kilogram of lean body mass per day. So if you weigh 100 kilos (220 lbs.), and 70% of your body is lean tissue, then you would want to eat 70-105 g of protein a day. Since the protein content of almost every meat is around 25%, that means you would want to eat 280-420 grams (10-15 oz.) of meat a day. (Figure roughly 7 grams of protein to an ounce of meat.)
The point of a ketogenic diet is (a) to lower serum glucose and insulin, and (b) to obtain the benefits of circulating ketone bodies. Thus we lower carbohydrate intake, because it raises serum glucose (carbohydrates being mainly glucose molecules in various arrangements) and therefore insulin. In the context of a low-carb diet, a little extra protein in the diet is not the concern it might be when on a high-carb diet, but protein intake should still be kept moderate. To replace the calories that are no longer coming from carbohydrate, we eat fat, since fat provokes virtually no insulin response. To avoid triggering a famine response in the body, we recommend eating enough protein and fat to satisfy your hunger.
Hi! Sorry for the delay, the macros I try to hit are 5% carbs, 75% fat, 20% protein. I feel like I am eating enough, but I am usually not very hungry, so its possible I am not eating my whole portion. I am also thinking it may be electrolyte issue, because
I am so tired all the time, also very lethargic. Yesterday I ate, coffee with MCT, butter and heavy cream, lunch was a chicken salad with oil and dinner was shrimp scampi and ceasar salad.
Is there any other info I can provide to help maybe see what I am doing wrong?
Thank you!
Jessica
