I can’t believe I’ve been doing this all wrong!

(Trudy) #1

Well, not all wrong but made a huge mistake. I have been having occasional sugarless co “lollies”…had more than the usual couple last night, woke this morning dizzy and feeling blah…checked ketones 0.0…Now, I’ve been 0.1 before but never 0.0 when I’ve checked. Some research, maltitol is the sweetener used, very similar to sugar how it reacts in the body. I started this journey in March 2018 and cannot believe I was sucked in by eating this rubbish. Fair chance I’ve been “carb cycling” all this time :grimacing::face_with_symbols_over_mouth:. Back on track now, lesson learnt!

maltitol ….holy cow. I tried it and never again in this lifetime LOL
Instant D in the bathroom…omg that stuff killed me fast! yuk.
One of the top worst ones out there.

[/quote]. Yep! I have a pretty tough stomach so no issues there but felt like rubbish.

#4

yea I have a cast iron gut. nothing gets me ever…but this stuff…LOL…whatever this crap is took me down. I was awed it did that but wow I went down on it HAHA

(Susan) #5

I cut out all artificial sweeteners in June due to a variety of reasons; one being it stalls weight loss for me.

#6

oh yea for many all artificial sweeteners aren’t good…so get that. I don’t do them either. I learned

(Allie) #7

Maltitol is evil.
That’s all.

(Kimbrie) #8

That is a real stinker for sure, but as you see, your body will let you know when stuff is out of balance. Sounds like you might need to find an alternative “comfort” item to take its place. I am not sure if they make keto approved lollies but worth looking into for sure…best of luck to you

Stevia is no better either, regardless of not having much of an impact on glucose, it’s still a natural derivative of sugar beets. Best to avoid them all

#10

Erythritol works well for me. It affects people in different ways, where toiletry habits are concerned.
It keeps me from getting bunged up!

(Edith) #11

Stevia is actually extracted from the leaves of the stevia plant.

Edit:

Amazing how things can sneak in like that. Lesson learned and keto on  You got this!

(Full Metal KETO AF) #13

The best move you can make on KETO is moving away from sweets. By using artificial sweeteners you keep your sweet tooth alive. If you ween off of them you’re craving for sweet tastes will go to sleep and your taste will evolve. I know this from experience. You will begin to experience the subtle sweetness of things like cabbage and broccoli and it will be a treat. Berries will taste much sweeter. This is the natural balance of your tasting ability without using refined sugar, honey or artificial sweeteners.

You should also know that all sweet tastes in your mouth trigger a cephalic response that causes insulin to be released to deal with what your brain perceives as sugar coming in. If you eat artificial sweeteners throughout the day in diabetic candy, sugarless gum, or in tea, coffee or diet soda between meals you’ll keep insulin high throughout the day and insulin in the blood causes fat storage and works against weight loss.

That’s why it’s recommended to stop snacks as soon as you’re able. To give your body time to burn fat when insulin drops low. Most move on to two meals a day and eventually some to one meal per day. It gets easier the more you get away from snacking and sweet addiction. Artificial sweeteners influence many to eat when they aren’t really hungry, you just want a psychological reward or comfort for whatever reason. Continuing to associate food and reward works against progressing toward eating with purpose and not just for pleasure. Eliminating eating as a reward or for just pleasure is the last hurdle towards normalized eating patterns rather than the eating cycle that the SAD has ingrained into your habits. You will see food for what it is, fuel and nutrients for your body.

All that said I keep some allulose in my house, I had erythritol but ran out. I use small amounts occasionally cooking a stir fry or in a sauce for balancing flavors. I make the odd cake for a birthday or Christmas treats. Occasionally I will have a diet soda on the rare occasion that I am eating in a restaurant. But my use of them is very limited and more than a month goes by without using any to give you an idea. I don’t crave sweet things like before. I was really hooked on sweets pre KETO but not anymore. Stuff can taste sickeningly sweet now that I used to like, for instance a peanut butter cup.

I wish you luck progressing on your evolving KETO journey. :cowboy_hat_face:

This has been my experience as well. Many of the foods that were always “good for me but I didn’t like to eat” become wonderful treats - broccoli and cabbage for example, as mentioned above. Also Brussel’s Sprouts, which I used to detest. I will eat every one of them that make their way to my dinner plate, and go back for seconds.

Even fresh squeezed lemon juice, added to water, tastes like lemonade to me.

I was a major sugar maniac pre-keto and was using sweeteners until June, (when I joined the forum and found out how detrimental they were and cut them out totally). Cabbage is delicious fried in butter, and tastes sweet to me, as David says. When you eliminate all the sweets, things that never tasted sweet to you before, will taste sweet. Your tastebuds will awaken and so will your sense of smell, your vision might improve (I have read this on the forum before!) Keto is a very healing and exciting way of eating. I wish you all the best in your continued journey =). Keep us posted!

(Trudy) #16

This “error” has occurred more now that I’m in maintenance, slipped back into having treats every now and then. Going to do two weeks clean just to start afresh. Back to being disciplined like when I started this WOE!

(Katie the Quiche Scoffing Stick Ninja ) #17

You are right, I was thinking of sucrose lol

(Trudy) #18

I’m steering clear of all artificial sweeteners for now, back to proper food.

#19

I am always shocked that plain old water tastes so sweet to me
Who knew LOL being in deep keto I sure do now.

(Richard Levy) #20

I avoid any “sugar free” products containing Maltitol. It’s 80% or so the same as sugar. I made that mistake years ago with some amazing sugar free ice cream…never again.
