I am new starting today. I need to lose 60lbs

Yes I can relate to most what just said. I am not completely there yet but pretty darn close. I am still eating a few things I shouldn’t and not eating a few things I should be, but I am getting closer.

Length of time will vary. I lost 20 lbs in 5 months, but I think I lost even more fat, because I believe during the same time I gained about 10 lbs of muscle. I typically eat a little PB every day, but it has carbs, and you will just have to count the net carbs. I recommend only natural or preferably organic PB. When I do keto, I eliminate the PB, because I spend my carb allowance elsewhere. There are people who make abnormally small LDL. If that is in your genetics, then yes, you need to limit your cholesterol. Otherwise, I don’t worry about the usual cholesterol readings… I only worry about oxLDL or oxidized cholesterol, which I believe to be the primary driver of heart disease along with glycated LDL.

It is definitely possible. Losing weight is not necessarily “really hard.” In fact I tried not to cut calories at all. I generally only eat two meals per day. If I got hungry in the middle of the day, I would break out a grass fed beef hot dog or maybe sausage and mustard. Sometimes I would have about a 1/2 cup of nut mix I make myself with raw pecans, almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, coconut, and either oat rolled dates or raisins. I might even cheat and have a JoJo bar. Yeah, there’s a few carbs there, but I could still lose weight eating 50 g of carbs/day. However, I am a male, and was doing strength training 3 times/wk. I even incorporated a fat bomb, which I would have right before my workouts… I later figured this out to be at least a thousand calories by itself(it did have a little PB with all the coconut oil). After my workout, I would have a protein smoothie with some carbs, and then have dinner. On my non fast days, I had a full fat yogurt for breakfast, which I still have every morning. Yet, I do not gain weight because I walk a lot every day, and burn that fat, rather than having lunch and relying on a bunch of carbs.

Anyway, I thought it would be “really hard” and that is what I told my wife, but surprisingly, I did not find it hard. I didn’t feel like I was starving myself at all, and I felt really good. My strength improved well in my workouts. I really enjoyed my meals and ate full, satiating meals - large, 3 course breakfasts, and fairly large dinners with at least 1/2 pound of some kind of meat or seafood, and a half plate of cruciferous veggies or asparagus or a whole plate of salad with homemade MCT dressing. It was tasty and filling, and I felt great… not the “really hard” time I initially expected at all. If I got a hankering for some kind of “junk food” or felt hungry, I would have a protein smoothie… I use Orgain protein powder sweetened with stevia or back then monk fruit/erythritol. I would use the chocolate flavor so as to make it feel more like a naughty chocolate milk shake… lol.

After seeing me, my wife also did keto again, and lost about 50 lbs, but then decided to quit, and yeah she went back to carbs and sweets… yep, the weight has mostly returned. I believe she did not incorporate enough fat, so her body went into “emergency mode” by producing reverse T3 to stop her weight loss. Yeah, esp women can do this. So, don’t be too worried about consuming some calories in the form of fats. Just make them healthy, natural fats rather than man-made or refined fats.

BTW welcome. Let us know any issues that pop up. Along with the first few pounds, your body will tend to lose electrolytes with the water, so add a pinch of sea salt to your water.

If you are nuts about peanut butter, try getting some very heavy whipping cream, add a teaspoon of peanut butter and whip it up. I like to put some blueberries or a strawberry on top - but this will count as much of your carbs for the day. It’s decadent though, and super sating.

Also, if you think you need all kinds of veggies for vitamins and other nutrients, look up nutritional values of meats and fish. You’ll be surprised.

Oh wow this is so amazing. I hope I can lose weight as good as you. Thank you so much for giving me hope. You and others are very kind. I am very thankful :infinity:

#46

I will definitely try this recipe. Thank you so much dear.

#47

I am very thankful for your details and advice. It’s really helpful. I am at early stage therefore it is quite confusing and hard. I hope it would get easier with time. May I ask how long your wife lost 50bls? Did she gain all 50bls back and what was the reason? I plan to switch to plants base diet after I reach my goal. Thank you so much for your precious time.

#48

May I ask you all about keto diet versus plants base. Which one is better to prevent cancer. I honestly don’t understand the science literature. I thought it always says stay away from red meat to prevent cancer. I am honestly very confused about this topic thus so far I eat only eggs. I would have eaten fish if I could but I only like seabass which is really hard to find and very expensive for good ones. Do I have to worry about cholesterol if I consume too many eggs like 3 daily. I also eat bacon and pork.

Thank you so much for your time.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #49

Any low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet, is less likely to promote cancer. Too much glucose in the diet (which is what carbohydrate is) causes metabolic damage to cells that can easily turn them cancerous.
So avoiding too much carbohydrate is the key to keeping cancer risk low.

Know that it is possible to do a vegan keto diet, but it takes planning and you will need certain supplements. Vegetarian keto is easier, especially for someone willing to eat eggs and fish. An all-meat, plant-free keto diet is also possible. So you see, you have lots of choices available.

The idea that red meat causes cancer is perplexing; there is no evidence to show that. One lecture I saw reviewed the literature, and out of 800-900 studies, only 6 or 7 even suggested that it was possible for red meat to cause cancer. The other several hundred studies showed no link at all between cancer and red meat.

The idea that dietary cholesterol is a problem has been dropped; our blood levels of cholesterol have nothing to do with how much or how little cholesterol is in our food. As for whether cholesterol is the cause of heart disease, or not, this idea is highly debatable. There is much more evidence to suggest that it does not than there is to suggest that it does, and the original advice to avoid saturated fat came from a study that was manipulated to show the result the researcher wanted to show. So eat your bacon and enjoy it! :bacon::bacon::bacon:

She basically tried to do keto on a vegan diet - that meant a lot of plant based protein smoothies, salads, and cruciferous vegetables - some occassional chicken. It took her more than 6 months to lose that 50 pounds, but it was pretty dramatic. Then she hit a weight loss wall, and I think got discouraged. I feel she cut her overall calories too much, and tried to get her to eat more fat to help her body switch over to more of a fat burning mode rather than shut down. Like I explained when calories are cut, eventually, the body willl slow down its metabolism so as not to lose too much weight. It does this by producing reverse T3(reverse thyroid) to stop weight loss. Reverse T3 blocks the sites where normal T3 would normally operate to rev up things. This has the effect of slowing the metabolism. To prevent this from happening, don’t cut overall calories. Like I said, women seem particularly prone to this happening. Keto allows the weight loss to continue by replacing the carb calories with fat calories, but lowering insulin, so that fat gets burned off.

@iwannalose60bls, so how are you hanging in there? I hope you’re standing strong.
There are a lot of good people with great advice and encouragement around here.
Now in my case I’m not keto but I am carnivore. Not saying it’s the best way, it’s just my way. We are all different in not only personality, shape, size and physiology.
You will find your path and what works for your body.
For me, I abstain from all forms of sugar and anything sweet. I’m also as close to zero carbs as I can get. It took me about three weeks to eliminate the carb cravings but they are gone. I no longer have to resist sugar or carbs because I just don’t have any desire for them. I look at food totally different these days. I lost 20 lbs in one month but I’ve stalled out and haven’t lost anything for a week now. But I’m not worried about it. It’ll start up again as long as I just stay the course. What’s more important is how I feel. My energy is higher than it’s been in ten years. The inflammation and arthritis in my body is greatly reduced. I’m exercising again and enjoying it.
You have a lot of questions about what foods to eat and what they can do to your health. If I may, I’d like to suggest that you look up some doctors on Utube that could answer your questions and maybe put your mind at ease.
Dr. Ken Berry
Dr. Paul Saladino
Dr. Anthony Chaffee
There are many others that can give you the answers to how and why the low carb lifestyle not only works but is good for you.
Good luck with your journey.
Stay the course and stay healthy.

Oh wow thank you so much for your kindness. How do you lose 20bls in 1 month? That’s incredible achievement. I am still struggling to be honest. I hope one day I can reach your level. I appreciate your recommendations. I will research on it. :blue_heart:

#53

Thank you so much for your explanation. My doctor still says stay away from red meat and high cholesterol food. I don’t understand why there is such a big shift in medicine in this area. That’s why newbies like me are very confused. I am very thankful for your help. Thank you so much for everyone here. Everyone is so kind and amazing. Thank you so much.

#54

Thank you for your kindness. So how many calories I should eat then? I feel bad if I eat too much. Thank you for your time.

(Peter - Don't Fear the Fat ) #55

Don’t count calories.
Check Dr Ken Berry on YouTube for cholesterol.
Most doctors are 30 years out of date on cholesterol and 30 years ago it was all lies…. Most doctors still follow that doctrine. Things are starting to change in the UK thanks to Dr Unwin

Weight loss is a side effect in the evolution to a healthier self.

It’s fine to count calories (unless it’s a chore. it is for me, a big one but I am curious… sometimes it’s informative too. I track all my macros) just don’t try to force some numbers on yourself. When I track, my numbers are still all over the place as I don’t enforce things. I know how I should eat but if I am hungry, I surely won’t stop, not even if I am 1000 kcal over what I consider right for a good day (with reason). My body gives me signs and I respect those though sometimes we need to learn that what signs should be ignored. Our body or possibly mind can conjure up some tiny hunger-like signs sometimes, without any real need for food. It took me a long time to sort that out but now I know when to eat. It’s somewhat harder to decide when to stop but now I figured out what I should start to expect good results (a pound of meat and a few eggs is a good base for me  for a day, separate meals are less important in my case. if I start to add other things, that can mess up satiation and macros so first I eat my good stuff if possible).

And don’t ever feel bad because you ate much. I am glad I am immune to that. You may want to eat not too much, it may be very needed, even like in my case but I tweak my diet, choose my food items well, ensure some good timing… And if I do those right, I can eat as much as I like and it won’t be too much (maybe sometimes but I don’t consider the occasional higher-cal day bad at all). If I choose the wrong items (it may be carnivore, it still can trigger overeating) or eat in a big eating window, I typically overeat. Forcing things isn’t good and hunger means we need more food. Sometimes I just need a specific food without hunger because I neglected that need during my meals before… That is one reason I start with a bunch of meat and some eggs, I can miss those badly. I don’t miss the less important, fat intake ballooning, non-satiating items so I avoid them as much as I comfortably can or use them in moderation. This works nicely lately so I expect results if I can keep it up. But I track so I clearly see that when I do it right, I eat little (not too much or if I do, I automatically eat more on the next day or something. nothing can trick my body into unnoticeable starvation) while I am way less hungry and things get more convenient and chill. Pure win, I don’t sacrifice anything, I eat whenever I really feel like…

I am unsure if it was worth to write these but who knows?

By the way, the answers basically started with no calorie counting several days ago…

First, the bit about dietary cholesterol is just plain wrong. Even the guy who got everyone afraid of saturated fat had to admit his research showed no connexion between cholesterol in the diet and the level of cholesterol in the blood, and this has been confirmed by more-recent research. So eat your eggs, and don’t worry.

The red-meat thing comes from a fear of saturated fat, which is based on faulty data and has never been confirmed by later studies. In fact, a number of studies show the exact opposite. One major study, in fact, showed a clear correlation between lower cholesterol and higher cancer rates, but the American authorities at the time decided not to draw attention to these results, “to avoid confusing the public.” This is documented by Nina Teicholz in her book, The Big Fat Surprise.

I am not a doctor and thus not able to tell you that Keto is the way, especially because of your FH high cholesterol. The number of 60Lbs is that your number or your doctor’s number? If I were you I would eliminate every food that was white or could be white. Eggs are the exception. Walking after every meal was non negotiable for me in the beginning. I only measured amount of protein. Eat lots of veggies and protein and maybe some blueberries (1 cup is 15grams of carbs). Chicken and fish would be my prime source of protein. I suspect that dairy could be a problem, so avoid even in coffee. Bullet-proof is good.

Dear everyone I am very thankful for your kindness and help. This forum is God sent to me. I seriously feel thankful to your help. It has not been easy as I still feel hungry and I might eat too much peanut butter thus carb. I will try my best but in the morning I only like to eat PB.

I will do more reading and watching YouTube channel as you all recommended those DR names. I hope next year my goal can be attained. Thank you so much. God bless you all :heartbeat:.

If you keep your carbohydrate intake low, you can safely eat to satisfy your hunger. Many forum members have reported that they did not begin to lose fat until they started eating more, not less. The body reacts to short rations by slowing down your metabolism, which means you have to eat even less, which means the body slows things down even more, and so on. But if you eat more, your body revs up your metabolism, and starts to burn more, especially fat. This is all assuming you are eating a low-carb diet, of course.

It is a documented fact that some of the people who claim to eat less and still gain weight are actually telling the truth. (Of course, others can be deluded.) The explanation lies in how the insulin response to excess glucose (and carbohydrates are nothing but glucose molecules linked up in different ways) affects the various systems of the body. Insulin is the primary hormone involved in getting excess glucose turned into fat and stored.
