I am new starting today. I need to lose 60lbs

#1

Hello everyone I am very new. I need to lose 60bls. How long does it take? I understand I need to eat under 20 carb a day. Can I eat peanut butter? I have FH high cholesterol genetics. Is this safe? Thank you so much.

Peanut butter has fat, protein and carbs.

It will dehydate your mouth, so grab yourself a bottle of water too. But it isn’t bad (check the label).

Welcome to the forum btw.
For me, I just let things happen. Stick to the plan…no carbs, no junk food; watch the weight drop off.

Thank you so much for your kind reply. Do I have to count calories? I am confused about how much I should eat day. Thank you so much.

No you don’t have to count calories.

You can if you want, but I would advise against it. There’s enough stresses in this world already!

No junk food, no carbs, plenty of water. It really is that simple.
Best of luck

Thank you so much for your advice .

You don’t have to starve, all you have to do is avoid the wrong foods.

I love food, and a Keto plan has all the food types I like. It is doable.

Welcome to the Forum
Coops has said the important things. You will lose weight fast in the beginning, it’s brilliant.
I eat peanut butter most days as part of my home made chocolate or fat bomb. But keep those carbs really low. And check them, don’t assume anything.
It’s great if you can also eat twice a day. no snacks. 2 meals 6 hrs apart.
And don’t fear the fat in food. It’s your new fuel, you need it and keeps you feeling full.
And salt, you’ll need more.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #8

You can do a ketogenic diet any way you want, but a lot of the standard advice doesn’t really apply.

For instance, we recommend eating to satiety rather than counting calories, because we lose fat by eating the right food, rather than by cutting calories. Eat real, whole foods and avoid sugar, grains, and starches. You’ll be fine, as long as you strictly limit your carb intake.

Yes, don’t starve yourself, you won’t lose properly if you do. Eat as much as you want - but no carbs. The 20 allowed carbs are reached before you know it. Don’t buy expensive Keto products, keep it simple. Meat, fat, butter, fatty fish, eggs, (yes, bacon) , heavy cream and cheese if you like. Read labels on condiments - they tend to have sugar in them. No, absolutely no sugar. It’s really simple, and you should not be hungry. You should be satisfied when you stop eating.

Forget what has been drilled in your head about fat - eat all the fat you want.

No sugar, no grains. Eat until you’re full. Welcome!

If you are like me, it takes forever  (But 60lbs is much enough that even I would lose some first  And I make the ultimate mistake: I eat too much fat. I can’t help it but I have plans.) We just can’t tell how long it will take.
Eat the right food, I wouldn’t track to begin with (or just carbs. I always had to track on my original keto as it was so easy to overdo carbs), tracking is a pain, at least I dislike it very much but I am super curious and it gives me important info anyway, I use it to figure out what food satiates me and what doesn’t to avoid overeating. Nowadays I eat meat with an unknown fat content so I can’t track my fat intake but I still can guess my protein intake and that is useful. (And I do can guess my fat intake to some extent.)
First just get used to and enjoy eating the right food, maybe it will be enough for you  Good luck!

If you don’t want to track or you feel the need to eat carby items (I basically always did), make sure your main food has barely any carbs. It may make things easier. Or it may not, it depends. Try to find a style you find not too restrictive. I never cared about keto items. Keto allows everything (well maybe don’t eat added sugar if possible… but even if it’s added sugar, most of us eat it in our condiments or pickles in tiny amounts. amounts matter a lot and sometimes it’s a pain to go for 0.0g added sugar every day. do it if you can but don’t be a perfectionist at all cost), it’s about the carb intake. Whatever is best for you using all your knowledge about yourself and health…

I can’t say anything about when and how many times to eat as it’s totally individual. I may have a good idea what I aim for - but my body and mind just goes into the way and I eat 5 times instead of 1. But I need to get my food so I eat until I stop getting hungry. Oh yeah. Don’t do this “eating only when hungry” thing if it results in undereating, that’s not good and healthy. Some of us need to eat without hunger or stop when not satiated, I don’t want to write about it much as it doesn’t seem to be typical but some just shouldn’t trust certain urges much. Some people are never even hungry or their hunger is just totally unreliable.

Get enough protein  It’s hard to impossible to get way too much for most of us but you will notice if you manage to reach protein toxicity… But few people do that. I eat high-protein and I can’t avoid it but it’s still a healthy level, normally your body automatically stops when protein gets really high I suppose.
DON’T fear protein. There are old wrong beliefs regarding high protein and ketosis problems, don’t listen to that. There are some people who are better with higher fat and lower protein but most people don’t have problems with a bit high protein.

Don’t fear fat either but some people should be careful with that. And even if you aren’t one of them, don’t put fat galore into everything like so many newbies. You need enough fat, not a ton of it when you don’t even desire it, especially when you need to lose bodyfat.

You don’t need to fast, it’s something that comes up often with keto, fasting. It’s individual. Do it if you feel like it especially if it comes naturally - but then you don’ty need to wait for fat adaptation at all. I always fasted easier with carbs and my fasting abilities deteriorated as I dropped my carbs. It’s usually the opposite but we are all different and there are many factors in play. It’s fine to eat many times a day if you need that, better than feeling starved and undereating… It’s fine to eat once from day 1 if that works best for you. And that one meal may be breakfast or dinner, each to their own. Maybe you have very different days. Do what suits you.
For many of us, it takes some experimenting to find our sweet spot. You can’t just follow someone else’s woe expecting it surely will work for you.

You don’t have to count calories in the beginning. I would watch macros to make sure you are eating enough fat, protein, and carbs. If you plateau quickly or don’t lose at all, I would definitely look at total calories then.

Thank you so much everyone for your kind advice. I hope I can get through the first month or 6 weeks. I heard 6 weeks we will get used to the change, am I right?

  1. How long it takes you all to get used to this new way of eating?
  2. Many YouTubers lose 60bls in 4 months. Is that reality?

I am very thankful for your support. God bless you all :two_hearts:.

How much you lose depends on how much you have to lose. If you need to lose 200 pounds, you will lose much bigger chunks than if you have to lose 20 pounds. Measuring this in time and pounds makes little sense.

It took me 3 or 4 weeks to get into Ketosis. I do not like measuring things, and I have not measured a thing other than watching carbs via a chart I have on my fridge. So, I don’t know for sure how long it took.
I have lost in excess of 120 pounds. Contrary to what is intuitive, I feed stalls. I figure my body is stalling because it needs time to adjust, or it feels that starvation is happening. Either way, I allow it and feed it. Patience is everything when losing weight, whatever method you use.

Once you start losing, you will lose more at first, and the closer you get to where you want to be, the slower you will lose. Again, patience is everything. If you then start depriving your body, it will lower metabolism and stall more vigorously.

All this time I have eaten as much as I want of whatever I want, as long as I stay within my carb limit. I ignore calories, portion size, everything like that. I am happily sated and energetic.

Works for me.

Oh wow you lost 120bls? That’s incredible. I have to lose 60bls and I already feel hopeless. I don’t know if I can achieve this. Thank you so much for your thoughts.

(Mike W.) #16

Why do you have to lose 60 lbs? How do your blood labs look?

(Robin) #17

I lost 60 my first year, weight-wise. So that’s only 5 pounds a month. But my body shape quickly changed dramatically. Even when the scales didn’t always reflect it, my body and my clothes certainly did, with the bonus of feeling so much better in every way.

Over the next two years, I lost another 15-20 pounds and wasn’t trying. Just staying steady. I’m now at my ideal weight and seem to have settled there.

Keep in mind that if you lose 60 and then go back to your old ways, the weight will pile back on. This really is a lifestyle decision.
So patience, grasshopper.
You got this!

Thank you for your thoughts friends. I would like to be slim. I weight 174 BLS sadly. I would like to be slim like size zero or under 5 or under 125bls. But to be honest I don’t know if that is even possible. I know losing weight is really hard. I really admire you all for great achievements.

#19

I did not do any lab work. I just want to be size zero or under 5. I know it’s really hard :sob:. Thank you for your thoughts.

Thank you so much for your kind encouragement. I hope I can achieve my goal by next summer. Congratulations on your achievements. That’s incredible. Did you calculate your calorie at all? I just don’t understand why we can eat a lot but losing weight. Is 1500 calories too much? Thank you.
