Hypothyroid and keto

science

(Brian D.) #1

Hi all,
I’m new here and have just started a Ketogenic diet. Though here I want to ask a question for a family member that is considering Keto but has concerns.

She is a ~60 years old female diagnosed with hypothyroidism, specifically low T4. She is tired a lot and has low body temps (94.2-95.6 this week).

I’ve read elsewhere that people with low thyroid function can have problems processing fats, also that weight loss can further decrease thyroid function, but I’m not sure how valid these concerns are.

Does anyone know of any science that can alleviate these concerns or confirm that a high fat diet might be problematic? I’ve looked around a bit online and here and haven’t found anything concretely addressing ketosis, hyprothyroid, and low T4 levels.

This may be in the wrong sub-forum so feel free to move it to an appropriate topic.

Thanks

There’s some helpful discussion on Hypothyroidism on Jimmy Moore’s Keto Talk episode 9.

My wife has it, so it’s interesting to me that Dr Adam Nally recommends Keto for it. That’s going to be an interesting conversation as she’s previously said she won’t do Keto

I’ve also written on this topic.

Hi
Those body temperatures are ‘low’. My temps today have been 97 and 97.35… I am not losing weight… I started about 10 days ago, but i hope that if I persevere, I’ll succeed. There is a lot of money to be made out there if hypothyroid people give up!. Today, for the first time the strips I use in my urine have shown color! (You know the ones I mean? Ketosfix from Bayer). I am older than 60. I am not weighing myself. I can wait… lets try!!!
