Hurricane Keto

Hi All,

I am on the east coast (piedmont region of North Carolina) and we are in almost-full panic mode as we prep for Hurricane Florence. Last night I was dispatched to the grocery store to stock up for my pregnant wife. The list was essentially 95% carbs (granola bars, apples, bananas, cereal, chips, etc). I managed some almonds and a few cans of tuna but otherwise it was all no-go. As I surveyed my basket waiting in the 14 person line, I was realizing just how much “fresh” food I eat now that I’m mostly/lazy keto. There just doesn’t seem to be much overlap in the categories of “shelf food” and “keto food”.

So what kind are some suggestions for non-refrigerated/frozen keto foods that I can stock up on in case we lose power for several days (which is quite likely)?

Thanks!

Edit: On the bright side, another thought I had was, “I am so glad that I don’t have to worry about 3 meals a day plus snacks!” I am very comfortably 18:6 IF and have done several OMAD days. So maybe now is just a good time to try a more extended fast!

It IS harder and people say we don’t eat healthy on keto!

Some suggestions: really firm avocados, beef jerky (watch the carbs), pork rinds, canned green beans, nuts, peanut butter (no sugar added). Butter can sit out on the counter for weeks so don’t be afraid of losing power and eating your butter.

Alternately - if you end up eating too many carbs then IF to burn them off quickly.

Most important - take care of yourself and your family! I lived in Houston for over 50 years so my heart goes out to you. Be safe.

Tuna is good, but not much fat. Sardines are great. And SPAM!!!. Nuts keep pretty well, especially if they’re roasted and kept sealed. Low/no sugar jerky.

Beef stick/summer sausage usually has a decent shelf life and doesn’t need refrigeration until opened…and still doesn’t if you just eat it all :yum:

Stay safe!!

Ok, those are good. I still can’t handle avocados, but the others are great. Any particular brand of beef jerky that you’re familiar with that I should look out for (to save me reading all the labels)? Thanks!

Thank you sir. I have honestly never tried SPAM!.
(“If you’re running low, go to the store
Carry some money to help you buy more
The tab is there to open the can
The can is there to hold in the spam”)

This may be the right time to try!

It’s not pretty straight out of the can, but it’s delicious, fatty and salty. Fries up wonderfully. It has a little sugar, but not much.

TJ is spot on, it’s delicious fried. especially in bacon fat, I have not had any for a couple years, but my mouth is watering at the moment just thinking about it.
Baton down the hatches and stay safe. Good luck.

I researched this recently for camping. Chorizo, Duke’s smoked shorty sausages, Baked Parmesan/Cheddar chips, Parmesan chunk, Brie Cheese (warm it up if you can), Nuts, Hard boiled eggs, fat bombs.

An article a few years ago indicated that a study Walmart did found out that the two big sellers before a predicted storm were Strawberry Pop Tarts and Beer. IIRC, sales of the pop tarts were up 700%.

So, after a major storm is forecast, the stores are supposed to put up displays of those at the end of aisles and at the front of the store.

Found the article

Thank you. Perhaps a silly (and google-able question) but how long are hard-boiled eggs good for with no refrigeration?

Actually that was one that should probably be kept in the cooler that I was going to take camping and eat the first morning. I’ve heard mixed things about keeping raw eggs unrefrigerated if you are still able to cook. I think if you buy them unrefrigerated like from a farmer they are okay to leave out for a week or so.

Haha. More things I can’t/don’t eat! That’s fine though. Perhaps it will keep all the riff-raff in the Poptart and beer line while I head for the SPAM.

The article you cited didn’t mention why “keeping eggs in the fridge is a weird American quirk.” It left that to a link in the article. It’s because the USDA requires eggs to be washed and sanitized. That removes a natural protective layer on the eggs.

They should be OK as long as you buy the eggs before the protective layer has been removed by them being washed. But I would think it would be illegal for the farmer to sell unwashed eggs to you?

Sorry - I have a dehydrator and make my own w/o sugar. Maybe someone else can chime in who buys it.

Canned chicken is keto-friendly, but not sure what you would add to it that doesn’t need to be refrigerated to make it taste good.

I am in CLT and feel your sense of foreboding… my husband and I are figuring on keeping an Ice chest to keep things cold should we lose power, and grilling out as things thaw if need be (we have gas and charcoal grills so could go several days that way if needed)… we may end up lacking in our fat consumption for a few days, but should still be able to avoid the carbs… still hoping overall that power stays on and we are on the lower end of rainfall totals and flooding…

Yes it is! I’m in VA and getting ready as well. Obviously you’re not getting a generator at this point but I went to a truck stop and grabbed a 2500 watt inverter and my plan is to run the fridge on it when the power goes byebye. Inverter cost $160 but I got a lot more than that in food and meat! Another thing you can do is start filling gallon jugs with water and throw them in the freezer now to keep that thing going long as possible. For my chest freezer I’m going to grab some dry ice and toss that in there and not open the thing.

Me and the wife are gonna eat what we got and then go into fast mode till the end.

Pork rinds, peanut butter, canned ham, jerky, eggs

You should try canning too.
I currently have 50 jars beef stew, chilli, chicken breast, and soy beans. Its very satisfying knowing what I put in it.

Any directions to point somebody in that wants to start that? I wanted to get into that but everything I always see is fruit, peppers etc. I wanna can MEAT! How does is stay good?

This concept makes my head explode.
