I started Keto 3 1/2 weeks ago, showed ketones in my urine by day 3 and had no hunger or keto flu symptoms at all. However, just this week I have been feeling hungry for the first time. Any ideas on why this would happen or what it could mean?
Hunger rearing its ugly head
Depends on how much you are eating. Your body is adjusting, and if it’s hungry you do need to feed it. Stick with the macros and eat some fat. You are very early on so the goal really isn’t eat less and lose hunger just yet. It’s adaptation. (someone can correct me if I am wrong)
A new discovery for me that curbs hunger quickly is warmed up cream cheese (A couple of tablespoons) and dip two pieces of bacon in it. Scoop till gone. SOOO salty fatty creamy good. I was a lover of those pretzel sticks at the mall dipped in the warm cream cheese and this is reminiscent of that for me.
I managed to avoid a break room full of bagels with this strategy this morning. No desire. (on week 9 btw)
If you’ve been a serial dieter (calorie and fat restricted) in the past, it may be your body turning up your BMR (basal metabolic rate) as it finally get the nutrients it needs in abundance. Your body is smart and will use this abundance to start any healing you may need (balancing hormones, building bone or muscle, improving nails, hair and skin, etc, etc, etc. Don’t worry about eating more, just keep the foods ketogenic. Add more fats to meals to get to satiety, so you’re not feeling hungry between meals. Macadamias, olives, cream cheese, butter, bacon, guacamole, avocados and pork rinds are some of my favorites. If you do this, you may find that your appetite goes way down in a week or two as your body decides that this new way of eating is the new normal.
Eat fat to satiety. That’s the deal. Fat is your friend. Eat it until you can get from one meal to the next without hunger pangs. If you want to understand how this all really works, listen to the Two Keto Dudes podcasts—they are an excellent resource. Start with number one and just keep going.
