I suspect pemmican has been around in various forms for a very long time! If you want to experience a more likely sample use tallow rather than lard. Of course, if you can buy bison meat and fat, go for it. Skip the berries. Native North Americans only started adding berries to the mix when they observed that the European traders and explorers seemed to like it better. Berries add very little if any nutrition so are just in there to add ‘carb’ flavour.

I’ve made ‘lard/bacon bits’ pemmican which is an interesting variation using readily available ingredients. I’ve recently purchased a Ninja Air Fryer (still awaiting delivery) to experiment making my own jerky from sliced beef. As noted in the article, pretty much all commercial jerky that I’ve examined contains lots of additional useless junk. Jerky should be dehydrated meat - period stop.
