How to get fit fast

Fascinating TV prog on C4 in the UK.

Some stuff not relevant to us but one experiment where they walked after breakfast and walked after not eating and guess which burnt more fat !!

No prizes and then they said carbs would be used first then fat used but of course if not fat adapted, you would not, you would bonk (mildly) and not feel great …

but the message is getting out there … this was based on LISS - Low intensity Steady State and guess what I call that - MAF …

then the explanation of the bonk after 90-120 mins of exercise but the answer - carb loading ha ha you can eat 10k cal of carbs before an event and will do sod all but here we go they explain carbs broken down into sugar for energy … correct and what happens if do not use these in every day life …

but surprise surprise those that take gels during the event (obstacle course) is classed as carb loading ha ha

We will win

It is very curious. Do you think the scientists behind the experiment ever consider the null hypothesis? Or expect these results?

Or do they just throw up their hands, throw out the results as ‘inconclusive’ and fall back to the whole ‘more research is necessary’ (in order to get the results I really want)?

CICO dogma is starting to look like a mental disorder or memetic virus to me.

This was a very rough one with 5/6 people but in ways more valid as no prep, conditioning etc ! As I said the result was as expected and for non fat adapted people though they used fat before carbs and not like no carbs in their system

Now that is the golden egg !

I’ve just watched it. Bit lightweight as these programmes tend to be but good to see that they are discussing fasted exercise. It did make me laugh when the guy said he was starving because he hadn’t breakfast  If only people realised the freedom of not having to eat all those meals.

Also thought it was good to see them mention that you have to do at least 90 minutes of exercise for it be considered an endurance exercise. i know you do your four/five bikes rides on nothing Ian but I still know so many people who have to a gel and water on a 10k run.

Btw I thought of you, Ian this past weekend when I did the Rawlinson Bracket - I think that’s your neck of the woods?

I did it Paula and the last 50km was awful haha !!! And a gel on a 10km run and is just comfort isn’t it ? They do not need it at all oh this was my water bottle today

Oh! I wish I’d known, although as we all looked like your picture above I wouldn’t have recognised you lol! It was a pretty nippy day and that wind on the second half was so cold. At least the hills kept us warm

Down here in Somerset it’s a red weather warning. No biking or running today. I’m knitting in front of the fire.

Ah the pic was today but pretty darn similar on Sunday !!! Did it in 3hr 50 so 15 mins slower than last year but stats better do the wind really slowed us all up ! Speaking to the guys who camebin at same time everyone was glad to be finished !!!

Great time Ian, my hubby (also called Ian) came in at 3.47. I was out there a lot longer (around five hours) cycling with a friend. He needed a gel before every hill. Great course though and lovely quiet roads. My focus this year is running and I was really pleased to find the ride doable on minimal training. Although my recent cycling in Maui (27C, bit better than the -2C on Sunday) did help a bit. Especially climbing up Haleakala - 36 miles uphill to 10,000ft. Have you been to Tenerife yet?

(ianrobo) #9

ah using Gels, you not pointed him here

funny mention Tenerife as yes did Teide earlier this year, I started a thread about it here:slight_smile:

climbing is wonderful !!

(ianrobo) #10

jeez that climb in Hawaii !!! wow !! more than Teide in same distance

(Paula Green) #11

It is a big climb! and not much air at the top. My husband did it three times while we were there. Was it very cold at the top of Teide? We were in Tenerife last year and it was snowing at the top in March. I really enjoyed enjoyed the climbing there but we stuck to lower down the volcano where it was warmer. We stayed at the hotel at the top though … just like the Sky team

the weather was stunning, the photo on Strava is at the top and 17-18C since then they had the coldest spell for years including snow !
