How often do you weigh in?

#1

Having a discussion with my Daughter. She is firmly in the camp of weighing weekly because of fluctuations. I’m firmly in the camp of weighing every day at same time, logging it on my smart phone and focusing on the trend - not the daily variation.

I used to think that weekly was the best way but last year got some advice to do it daily, makes you more accountable and seems to work for me.

Curious what you all do and why it works or doesn’t???

Whenever I feel like it… I go through stages of every day (mornings), but then go for weeks without checking once.

Twice a day…LOL…First thing in the morning and right before bed.

Been doing it that way for years. Don’t get excited about the fluctuations/variations, but have to step on the scale just to see where I’m at.

I always say I have OSD “Obessive Scale Disorder”

I personally can not weigh in daily due to the impact it can have on my mood if I don’t see results. Being a woman, certain things can cause swings in weight on a daily basis, especially during a certain time of month. My husband and I weigh in and measure weekly every Saturday morning to keep things consistent. We have done this on various diets throughout the last few years. It is really important for us to also take measurements because the scale usually does not move for me in the first month of any change in eating or exercise but the inches fall off.

When my wife and I wanted to lose weight, we weighed in every morning at the same time (before coffee). We also measured our tummies, to see how many inches we were losing. I have reach my goal weight, so am just maintaining, so I weigh in maybe once or twice a week, just make sure.

I weigh in almost every day…HOWEVER… I only record when I’m down from previous low weight. That way fluctuations don’t upset me.

It’s your N=1, work with it! If weighing daily and watching trends works for you, then you’re set. I have a friend who is OCD and that keeps her “scale watching” under control. If it starts getting obsessive, tweak it. I go in spurts, weighing more when I’m doing some kind of tweak to my diet, but the rest of the time I try not to weigh more than twice a week, preferably less. Unique snowflakes, & all that … :snowflake:

2x a week. Daily gave me more to think about than I needed. Having 3 full days between weigh-ins is motivating…

A few times per year, three to five probably. However, I like the idea of monitoring the trend with more rapid sampling.

Exactly the same for me. I focus on the monthly trend though which keeps me motivated.

My wife and I are truck drivers, we stay out 1 to 3 weeks at a time. My fair expensive great accurate scale is at home in my bathroom. Sometimes there are scales in the bathrooms that costs a quarter, they are not accurate and not all the same. For accurate weight, when one gets up from sleeping preferably 7 to 8 full hours, after their morning evacuation, and before morning coffee or water, and naked, get on the scale, that is a fair accurate weight. I don’t think daily or weekly matters, but I believe as weight does fluctuate, daily weighing may not be the best way to monitor ones success at weight loss. I prefer a weekly scale, or when I come home and do the proper ritual of sleeping, evacuation blah blah. And if we are home 2, 3 or more days, even eating religiously keto, my weight will fluctuate by 2 to 3 pounds every day. But weekly I do lose weight.

When I get out of bed and I relieve myself I step on the scale. Like yourself I note daily changes especially during a fast or particular meals but otherwise look for trends. For me the ideal is not that I weigh something but have established a pattern for recording the same info over the course of time using the same conditions.

I weigh just about every day, most days a couple of times. I rarely write anything down. It goes up and it goes down and it sometimes makes no sense at all. I’ll fast for a day and it seems to not budge and I’ll eat a big meal out and it’ll drop a few pounds. (??) But I don’t really get too excited either way. It’s not enough to change my mood because I know good and well that it’s gonna go up and it’s gonna go down.

Mostly, I notice that I will fluctuate around a certain range for a while. Then it will drop a few pounds and fluctuate around that certain range for a while. Ranges are probably 3 or 4 pounds and to be blunt, a good poop will lower the numbers by over a pound and just a night’s sleep can lower the number a few pounds. Seriously, it moves all over the place. Knowing that means that I don’t get very excited about anything it says, higher or lower.

I spent several months in the 230s. Now, I’m bouncing around in the upper 220s. I’ll probably be here in the 220s for a few months. No worries. It’s going in the right direction, slowly, but it’s going. I’ve got time. There’s no rush. When I hit 195, I’ve arrived at my goal.

I am firmly in camp B. I weigh daily and take the lowest of the week as my current weight. With a weekly weigh in you can be hitting the high point each time.

My wife, on the other hand, is firmly in the weigh once every 1-2 weeks camp because the higher days frustrate her.

Seems a personal decision that depends strongly on the individuals temperament and goals

I weigh daily, but only record weekly. It’s just a habit to wake up, pee, and step on the scale. It doesn’t hurt my mood, so I haven’t bothered to break the habit.

You can say that again!! Waste of a quarter. The kids love to abuse them, especially the ones that talk! Sometimes you can find a good balance scale if the t/s has a fitness center or a doctor’s office - they don’t mind someone coming in to weigh.

As I suspected everyone has a preference and for valid reasons. I don’t freak out if I have a cheat weekend (still 80% keto on cheat days) and I understand the weight fluctuations. It does help keep me from having a bad day turn into a bad week though.

I weigh in daily, same time every morning, then log it in. I know I am looking for a downward trend, and as long as that’s what I see- I’m happy. The upside in doing this- for me- is that if I see some significant weight increase over a day or two, I will go back and examine my eats for those days and see if I did anything differently. The daily weigh in helps me to stay vigilant in watching everything I am eating.

Until I really get the hang of this Keto thing, I think I will have to continue this daily process. I do watch my macros as well, and try to stay within an 80 to 90% fat - 15-20% protein - 5%carb range. Then, I look at the macros side by side with the weight trend, and it helps me find my mojo. =)

I’ve been weighing myself twice a day - before bed and after waking up. I’ve been logging the morning reading. IMO, more data makes it easier to spot a trend, either good or bad.

I’ll also sometimes weigh myself after long (multi-hour) sessions of either exercise or recreation. But I do this mostly to see how well I did on maintaining my hydration during those activities.
